However, McIvor does not tell them at first that he is an Army lieutenant transferring to Fort Chacon which is a disciplinary post. Several people riding with the train purchase items previously stolen from the Army from two men who go by the names Garrett and Whitey. Duke learns about it after all the goods have been sold so he runs the men off. Upon hearing about it McIvor suggests Duke should have arrested the men and confiscated the goods. After Charlie and Barnaby find two soldiers staked out Indian style McIvor reveals his identity and confiscates the items, much to Bill's displeasure as the people are not compensated. However, when McIvor informs the Colonel in charge at nearby Fort Chacon of this, he is ordered to stop his investigation and soon finds himself court-martialed when his West Point roommate betrays him. When his boss George Duskin catches Grover daydreaming again, he has had enough and fires Grover who is dumbfounded. Concerned not only about himself but the other workers who Duskin is threatening to fire, Grover, a tinkerer and inventor, decides to build a bomb which kills Duskin. Grover takes his widowed daughter-in-law Della who was married to his son who died at Gettysburg and his grandson Jeff on the Hale wagon train to settle in the west and escape the law. He is happy to be free but Jeff is far from happy wishing to be back home. With a couple of shots he kills the brave which brings the ire of his older brother Al. Al is worried about someone hearing the shots. In a couple of minutes a rider, Duke Shannon, rides up while scouting for the Hale wagon train. Al and his mother Ma Beecker tell Duke they are farmers looking for a wagon train to join up with to head west. Duke tells them where to go to meet the wagon train the next day. As he leaves he asks about the shots which led him to them but Dave says he was trying to kill a jack rabbit. After Duke leaves Al makes Dave go bury the brave. When the Beeckers join the wagon train, they refuse to mix with the others including stopping the unmarried Jenny Hynes from going to the dances.
