Cheers is in competition with Gary's Olde Towne Tavern once again, this time it's the annual Bloody Mary contest open to all bars in the Greater Boston area. Cheers won the competition the first two years, but Gary's, ever since it opened, has won the last four. Rebecca has at least managed to get the organizers to hold the contest at Cheers this year. Sam in particular is in Bloody Mary mode, even getting Norm to stop drinking beer and start sampling Bloody Mary's. Sam believes his secret ingredient - if he can get a hold of it - will win them the contest. Regardless, Rebecca plans on stealing some of Gary's Bloody Mary mix to have it analyzed, which they all agree - more publicly than they imagined - is the best Bloody Mary they've ever tasted. Captain Jean-Luc Picard convinces Fleet Admiral Shanthi that the Federation must no longer maintain neutrality because the Duras side's alliance with the Romulans turns the raging Klingon civil war into sort of a proxy war, which Gowron's loyal side is losing. The Enterprise goes on the Klingon homeworld to attend the installation of Gowron as the new head of the High Council. Captain Picard encourages Lt. Worf to seize the opportunity to clear his name. However Gowron boards, asking hasty help to prevent a Klingon civil war, claiming the sisters of the late traitor Duras head a corrupt conspiracy supported by at least three fleet commanders, Picard is the only established acceptable arbitrator. Captain Picard overrides Lieutenant Worf's reluctance to welcome Klingon ambassador K'Ehleyr aboard, arguing his discommendation in the business of his father's inherited murder conviction makes him honorless under Klingon tradition; to Worf's surprise, she also brings Alexander, their young son she never told him about, and now wants him back by a traditional oath, only he refuses thus to make them outcasts as well. But the most important guest is a surprise: The leader of the Klingon High Council, K'mpec, who was for years the only one capable to prevent a civil war, is dying and now demands Picard to find out which of the candidates for his succession about to arrive, Gowron and Duras, is unfit on account of foul, dishonoring stealth murder.
