Sidney visits Gary Bell, charged with Abigail Redmond's murder, in prison, to local disapproval. Meanwhile widowed stable owner Reggie Lawson asks Sidney to exorcise the spirit of his wife Anna, who killed herself but next day Reggie is also found hanged. Sidney doubts that it was actually suicide and believes that the poltergeist evidence was manufactured, with Anna's brother Laszlo, Reggie's new wife Kitty and adoring housekeeper Mrs Elton being suspects. Valentine and student colleague Kit Bartlett shared a penchant for climbing high buildings but a witness is sure that the victim was pushed. After Geordie has been threatened by a gun-toting woman college master Montgomery informs him that Lyall was a British spy in pursuit of a Russian agent, the Tsar.
