Helena Lubas is shot dead during a gun battle between her criminal boyfriend and the police and some months later Karim Benzal , who witnessed the shootings from his carpet shop is murdered. Police complaints investigator Rachel Sharpe claims there was a police cover up in the Lubas case, following information given by Karim and, whilst his widow tells Nikki he was being threatened by gangster Sakir, Rachel believes the police killed him. DI Cooke arrests Sakir but Jack's evidence shows that Sakir met a mystery man shortly before Karim's murder. Tim Friend, the officer who shot Helena, is still racked by guilt but his colleagues close rank against Rachel, who is told to drop the case. With police now investigating Leese Eleanor takes Stefan off the case and Rash is also fired for conducting an unofficial interview with Leese. However the pair combine to speak to Bruce Lockwood, who incriminates Ruhr as being out to discredit Remicon based on the Green Fern experiments. When two females assassins come after them the boys are able to use Bruce's evidence to close the case - though not before the body count has risen - and agree to a flat share together.
