Recovering from the abortion Esther tells Vernon Storey what she has done. Already embittered, it is the last straw when his thuggish son Walter gets beaten up by Frank and Vernon attacks the boy, killing him, though taking his body to a barn and blaming Frank. Told by the policeman that Dr Channing is suspected of transmitting secrets to the Germans Lady Ellen searches his room and finds a code book. Joyce saves conscientious objector Clifford from a beating and takes him to the hospital where John, recovering his memory, admits to sex with Lian while amnesiac, a confession which alienates Joyce. Danny forces Connie to help him rob a petrol lorry or else he will hurt Henry. She reluctantly agrees and Martin is also involved but the robbery goes wrong and Martin suggests they go on the run with the coins Fred Finch found in Mrs. Gulliver's garden. Joyce is perturbed that John is still distant though Dr. Channing is helping him recover his memory as he relives his escape from France helped by a young woman called Lian. Lady Ellen and Dr. Channing end up in bed and plan a life together so that she is shocked when a policeman tells her Dr. Channing is a suspected collaborator. Connie tries to replace an item Danny has stolen from a local shop and is almost accused herself though she is saved by Henry's intervention. The incident brings to light her past criminal life with Danny but Henry is forgiving and Connie tells Danny to go back to London. Iris is caught up in the Storeys' vendetta against the Tuckers when Vernon's thuggish son Walter kills a lamb she was weaning. Esther realises why she is being sick - she is pregnant by Vernon Storey. Following the injury of his land girl Rose, who was killed in the hospital bombing, Lady Ellen tells Storey that he and Finch should combine their farms for maximum efficiency. So Iris takes her proficiency test at Storey's farm, where she narrowly escapes being injured by his threshing machine. An angry Connie throws down the gauntlet to suggest a ploughing contest with farmers versus land girls. Finch remains in the care of Mrs. Gulliver, whilst anxious to return to his digging in her garden where he's discovered a cache of Roman coins. Esther is alarmed to find she is not well. Richard assures Joyce that she must be patient with John, who is suffering from amnesia. And, Connie is displeased to see her former flame, Danny, talking to her fiancé, Vicar Henry, at the church. After taking a direct hit which destroys the building the local hospital moves into Hoxley Hall where Lady Ellen meets old flame Dr. Richard Channing. She learns that Joyce's husband John, missing in France, has escaped back to England and arranges for him to recuperate at Hoxley Hall but he is amnesiac and fails to recognise his wife. Dennis Tucker's brother Frank comes to replace Billy as Finch's farmhand and befriends new land girl Iris who is illiterate and to whom he offers reading lessons. Finch, having to dig Mrs. Gulliver's garden for her, discovers a cache of old coins and, having injured himself, is only too happy to stay with her. Lady Ellen throws a party for the village to celebrate Connie and Henry's upcoming wedding but it is blighted by the appearance of the vengeful Storeys, smarting at Dennis's treatment of them, and by Connie's old boyfriend Danny, who has turned up from London. The normally sour-faced Mrs. Gulliver gives Fred Finch money for Martin's operation, but Esther has already been to see Vernon, whose generosity comes at a price. Farmer Finch finds Tucker sleeping rough in the barn and assumes he is responsible for the missing food. To raise funds for Martin's operation Finch agrees to a prize fight between Billy and the son of another farmer, Vernon, who has designs on Esther. Tucker, a former boxing champion, coaches Billy in return for work and lodgings on the farm. However, Vernon enters a different son than the one who was expected to fight. He is bigger and heavier and easily beats Billy. The money is lost to Esther. However Bea is proud of her husband, and they unite against Gillespie, who wants to take his grand-son back to the States. Connie finds out that Henry is the local vicar and is cool towards him, feeling he tricked her. Joyce follows Martin, and both are captured by the German. Billy marries Bea, having convinced himself that she is not using him and they love each other. John Fisher attends the wedding, as does Adam, with whom Annie is now in love and prepared to ask her husband Harry for a divorce. Bea is disapproving, given that her sister's marriage to Harry got them away from an abusive father. Lawrence tells his wife he is leaving her for Nancy. She tries to bribe Nancy with a hundred pounds and tells her Lawrence was not a war hero. However, when an increasingly deranged Tucker accuses Adam of sabotage after a faulty grenade explodes and points a gun at him, Lawrence intervenes and is killed. Bea is pregnant by G.I. Cal, and tells a shocked Annie - who cannot have children herself - that she wants an abortion. Annie dissuades her and, with Billy, confronts Cal in the pub where a fight breaks out. Bullying Home Guard Sergeant Tucker is convinced there is a collaborator on the farm and settles on Nancy, who can speak Italian. He gets Ellen, the Land Girls leader, to spy for him. She is reluctant but searches Nancy's room whereupon Nancy accuses Bea of going through her clothes. Billy tips Nancy off as to Tucker's suspicions.Joyce wins Lord Hoxley's respect when she helps him with his sick horse, though it is ultimately shot, causing a further rift between him and his wife. Halfway through World War Two sensible Joyce, a war orphan with a husband in the R.A.F. and vain Nancy, a reluctant conscript, arrive at the village of Helmstead to work as land girls at Pasture Farm with Frederick Finch and his son Billy. Along with married Annie and her teenaged sister Bea - whom Annie has brought along following an incident back home - they are billeted at Hoxley Hall. Lady Ellen Hoxley, a haughty aristocrat, runs local war charities but her husband Lawrence, a wounded Great War hero, is kind and approachable, inviting everyone to his wife's charity dance. Bea befriends some black G.I.s and asks them along in contravention of a colour bar and is upset when they are refused entry. She gets drunk and allows herself to be used for sex by sneaky American corporal Cal Gillespie and then gets thrown out after trying to punch him. At Rachel's birthday party Franklin is annoyed that his cousin Godfrey Ablewhite vies with him for Rachel's affection but when a group of Indian musicians arrive another guest, Eastern expert Mr Murthwaite, tells Rachel they are in fact guardians of the moonstone seeking it return to its temple in India.
