Larry is delighted his novel has been accepted for publication but dismayed by his family's apathy as Margo is more interested in the sexy priest and Gerry is obsessed with adding to his menagerie. To make amends Louisa organizes a public reading but it is poorly attended though good reviews in the English press are the cause for a party, where everybody gets drunk on Leslie's home-made kumquat liquor. Louisa decides to make money by selling produce at the local market, where she is not very successful but meets dashing Englishman Hugh Jarvis. A less welcome encounter is with abrasive new landlady Vasilia, who confiscates the furniture until the rent is paid. Louisa's solution is to create traditional British fare to sell and is grateful to Spiros for sharpening her sales technique. Gerry is more concerned with breeding otters whilst Margo, having failed to woo a young monk, considers becoming a nun.
