Perky, pert, congenial, fun? Are these adjectives to describe Diane? If so, she could become the 45th Miss Boston Barmaid, as Sam has entered her into the annual contest without her knowledge. Realistically not a contest to test wait skills, the event is to be held at Cheers this year. Diane, who feels degraded, hates such contests and chastises Sam for entering her. However she changes her tune when she thinks that she can use any speech opportunity during the contest as a platform to air her feminist views, especially of such contests. She doesn't tell anyone of what she plans to do. With a little help from Sam who has his own ulterior motives, Diane has an up and down contest, the downs including quashed speech opportunity after opportunity and the appearance of her infamous nervous facial tick. Tom Kenderson, Sam's old roommate from his Red Sox days, has just written his autobiography and is launching the book at Cheers since Sam is mentioned in it. Despite Tom asking Sam to read it before the book launch, Sam fails to do so. As the book is launched in front of a few reporters, Sam wishes that he had read it since Tom used the book as his way of coming out, which shocks Sam if only because Tom was a bigger womanizer than even him back then. Sam wants to be supportive of his old friend, but he is also deathly afraid of being construed as being gay himself. His support for Tom eventually wins out, which angers the regulars of the bar, who are afraid that Cheers will turn into a gay bar. Those regulars' concerns extend to being surrounded by what they assume will be stereotypically effeminate accoutrement around the establishment. After another loss by the Red Sox, this time to the Yankees, Carla vows for the umpteenth time that she is no longer a fan. She shows that she is all hot air as usual when a man named Big Ed, a Yankees fan from New York, comes into the bar denigrating the Bosox and Bostonians for supporting the Bosox. When Big Ed starts in on Sam the ex-big time Bosox player who is now the drunk, Carla has had it with his insults, and physically assaults Big Ed. He in turn threatens to sue unless Sam fires Carla. Sam is in a conundrum as he considers Carla a friend, but she has let her anger get the better of her too many times and if he doesn't do as Eddie requests, he could lose the bar. Sam and Diane convince Carla to see a therapist to deal with her anger issues. To save Carla's job and the bar, Sam too has to convince Ed that in Carla doing so, she is dealing with the issue, and Carla in turn has to demonstrate to Ed that she is both remorseful and changed, which is a tall order since she has ...
