The Persson family tries to adapt itself to a new life in the city. At the same time the Mohlin family tries to adapt itself to the social life in the village. Lars-Erik Dahl gets an exemption warrant from the military service. He feels worthless and moves to Stockholm with the intention of never coming back to the village again. Gunnar Löfgren calls his parents, Henning and Jenny Löfgren, and asks them if his son, Göran Löfgren, could stay at their farm for a while. Göran has become drug addicted.
