The guard on duty at the time, Briggs, swears he saw a ghost push Chilton over the railing. Samuel Jenkins of the Toronto Gazette informs the police that he was investigating Chilton's unscrupulous business dealings. Crabtree for his part wants to explore the supernatural elements of the case but Murdoch dissuades him. Dr. Grace says Chilton definitely died from the fall but it appears that he fell backwards over the balcony as if he had been pushed. A second man, Dr. Ansel Fraser, dies in a similar fashion and the police focus on the Provincial Secretary, Thaddeus Walsh. The city has also received a demand for $100,000 - or the entire city will be gassed. Using some of the evidence found in the film, Murdoch is able to locate the site where the extortionist killed the dog and the police find evidence of a very powerful poison having been used. They think they've solved the problem when they find and dismantle a gas bomb but Murdoch determines that the extortionist likely has sufficient gas to create many such bombs. An explosion at a market shop knocks Constables Crabtree (Jonny Harris) and Higgins (Lachlan Murdoch) to the street. Detective Murdoch's (Yannick Bisson) survey of the scene uncovers a homemade incendiary device. Peter Milne (Brock Johnson), the irate shopkeeper, demands to Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig) that the police cover his considerable losses. But with Higgins seriously injured in the blast, Brackenreid is enraged by his selfishness. Further investigation reveals many other neighbours don't think favourably of Milne, particularly Angus Trout (John Jarvis), who was driven out of business by the aggressive merchant. As Murdoch, Higgins and Brackenreid develop theories about the incident, Brackenreid believes the constabulary may have been the actual targets, given the proximity of the shop to a new police callbox. The release of Constable George Crabtree's (Jonny Harris) adventure novel, The Curse of the Pharaohs, fortuitously coincides with the exhibition of a recently discovered mummy's tomb. At the event, Detective Murdoch (Yannick Bisson) is charmed by Dr. Iris Bajjali (Athena Karkanis), an archeologist involved in the recent discovery. But when one of the other expedition archaeologists opens the sarcophagus for the audience, a cobra strikes and he's killed instantly. Murdoch immediately shuts down the exhibition, taking the casket as evidence. Organizer Desmond Rutherford (Aidan Devine) is outraged, but his ailing associate Phillip Uxbridge (Julian Richings) is relieved. Uxbridge tells Murdoch that everyone involved in the expedition is cursed. Given the research he did for his novel, Crabtree appoints himself the constabulary's ancient Egypt expert and schools his skeptical superior, Inspector Thomas Brackenreid (Thomas Craig), on the sequence of tragedies tied to the famous mummy's ...
