The next numbers the Machine provides are for fourteen-year-old Malcolm Booker, and his eight-year-old sister, Tracie Booker, who are in foster care as their mother is incarcerated on a conviction for illegal firearms possession. Reese, who is tasked with finding them, quickly learns that they are the intended targets, as they stole $500,000 in drug money from the Brotherhood, a gang led by the unknown Dominic. Reese knows of the Brotherhood because he helped put in jail one of the gang's higher ups, Link, who is now out. The DEA is interested in the case, their head agent being Erica Lennox, who decides to work in conjunction with Reese as she knows there is a mole in the DEA working for the Brotherhood. When Reese and Lennox eventually find Malcolm and Tracie, they learn the reason why they stole the money. However, Malcolm has hidden the money and refuses to give it back. Reese is getting buried under the paperwork in his undercover identity as Fusco's partner, and Shaw is adjusting to her new undercover identity as a street level criminal. As such, Reese foists off dealing with the latest number to Finch, who still is hesitant to continue such work. Finch decides at least to start the process if only because the number is akin to someone like him. She is college sophomore Claire Mahoney, a seemingly brilliant young woman with an analytical mind. However, her life seems to have fallen off the rails in the past year, ditching her college studies and having recently purchased a firearm. As Finch tails her, he believes that she is involved in some deadly code breaking game/puzzle, the puzzle which always involves the figure of a nautilus. With Samaritan up and running, it is a new reality for Reese, Finch, Shaw, Root and even Bear, who are on Samaritan's top five most wanted list, and thus are in hiding of sorts. Finch's Machine has manufactured undercover day jobs for each, Finch's which is close to his own mentality, while Reese and Shaw's are somewhat more surprising for different reasons. Root tries to explain to Shaw that these jobs, however inappropriate they may seem on the surface, were chosen by the Machine for a reason. When the Machine contacts Reese and Shaw with a new number, Reese is prepared to continue with their old work. Logistically it is a little more difficult for Shaw to take time away from her day job.
