This film focuses on contemporary 30- and 40-somethings trying to make sense of their lives in an age in which the old certainties have disappeared. Lorenzo and Davide make their lives together within a circle that includes Antonio and Angelica, married with children; Nerval and her policeman husband.

In a small village of the South of France, life is made difficult by a sweltering heat wave and its corollary, a worrisome lack of water. Everyone is under great pressure, especially the farmers whose fields are not irrigated. Which is the reason why the residents are less and less well-disposed toward one of them, Joseph, a mentally retarded young man whose never-ending antics are becoming, in such fraught context, something of an intolerable inconvenience. The mayor tries desperately to calm things down but nothing helps...

While reporting on the election of the Pope in Rome, the completely atheistic journalist Gregory falls in love with Maria of all people, who is about to become a nun and is therefore actually promised to God. Gregory faces an accumulation of mysterious obstacles as he tries to get closer to Maria. He has to find out that he is dealing with a supernatural competitor. However, Gregory is determined to take up the fight against the big enemy.
