Fred (Elliott Gould) lives with his Alzheimers' struggling wife, Susan in their home of over fifty years. Fred's grown up children try to convince him to move into a care home alongside Susan, however, he does not approve of this idea.
When her brother Bobby returns from World War II mentally damaged, Anna has to deal with her parents who don't acknowledge her brother's existence, who is now brought to a mental hospital. After his sudden death Anna begins to question her own sanity. Her gangster boyfriend Billy's action pushes her further, she's now convinced the only way she can be "cured" is to have a lobotomy.
When the lights go out during Hurricane Sandy, Dan falls and butt-dials his ex-girlfriend. Her name also happens to be Sandy. He takes it as a sign to visit her. Mimicking the hurricane's capacity to cross boundaries, interviews with firefighters who lost their homes during Sandy are intercut with this romantic comedy.
