Two and half years later, Birgitte is traveling the world out of politics when suddenly the changing Moderate Party makes her want to return. The problem is, Krause, whom she sent away to EU, is the leader of the party now, and does not want her back. Sejrø however tells Birgitte to oust Krause as a leader. Birgitte hires Katrine to help her, and they try to get the votes together so Birgitte could once again become the leader of the Moderate Party. Written by marin

Being accepted as a political party, New Democrats must take a stand on a controversial issue of banning buying sex. Through learning about the issue both Birgitte and Kathrine face their prejudices and their views on the issue change as they get personally more involved. It also affects their personal relations. The New Democrats finally have enough signatures to run for Parliament but need more candidates. Birgitte suggests economics professor Soren Ravn, but not all of the candidates in the party share her enthusiasm about him as he is very left-wing, and had previously been a member of the Communist Party. When the press catch on to this, they dig up his past and put him under intense personal pressure. Meanwhile, Birgitte receives bad news from the doctor which she tries to conceal from those around here. At TV1, viewing figures are up which has pleased the management, but the newsroom staff are unhappy with the changes in the programmes. Torben is under pressure both at work and at home, but is offered sympathy from his colleague Pia.

When prime minister Lars Hesselboe calls a general election, he takes everyone by surprise. TV1 swing into action, as do the political parties. However, with Birgitte undergoing daily radiation treatment, she is already struggling to keep up with work. How long can she keep making excuses and keep her illness a secret?

As election day nears, Birgitte comes clean to her party about her recent performance. Meanwhile, unable to make their mark with the opposition's policies, the New Democrats try to highlight the differences between their party and the Moderates. But when Jacob Kruse steals a key policy, a mole is suspected within the party.

The opinion polls are predicting five seats for the New Democrats in the coming election. Birgitte is confident her strategy for the New Democrats to go it alone is working out, but believes she has to take on the Moderates to boost their support further, as the differences between the two parties are not that apparent to most voters. In a debate of 'moderate parties', she decides to boldly attack Jacob Kruse. In the final debate on TV1, Kruse is put under pressure by Birgitte about his manifesto and eventually lashes out against her and does not manage to recover from this mistake. Torben ignores the demands of Alex to turn the final TV debate into a game show-style format.

Torben is fired on the morning of election day after refusing to follow Alex's demands, but is reinstated later after his colleagues threaten to strike. Following Kruse's outburst against Nyborg during the last debate on TV1, support for the New Democrats surges on polling day and they manage to capture 13 seats compared to just 5 for the Moderates. Both the Red (left-leaning) and Blue (right-leaning) coalition try to pull the New Democrats into their government as both need the New Democrats to make a majority in parliament. Birgitte is offered the post of Prime Minister with the Red coalition, but this would include the Freedom Party whose anti-immigration policies are diametrically opposed to the values of the New Democrats. Ultimately she decides to join the Blue coalition, and the series ends with Birgitte on her way to Borgen as the new minister of foreign affairs.
