Michael holds a service for Vernon's mother Helen, attended by young policeman Andrew Powell, who feels guilty for his part in Vernon's death, despite his colleagues' attempts to clear themselves by putting pressure on Andrew. Helen forgives Andrew, who comes to see Michael for peace of mind and explains what happened. Accepting Andrew's contrition Michael recalls how, as a schoolboy, he was sexually interfered with by his English teacher Father Matthew and seeks him out but the old man is defensive and anything but contrite, increasing Michael's anger. Michael Kerrigan is a dedicated, middle-aged priest in a run-down Northern parish, caring for the seriously ill mother who contributed to his miserable childhood. Christina Fitzsimmons is a beleaguered single mother of three, sacked from her lowly paid job for taking money from the till and preparing for her little girl's communion. Already struggling on meagre benefits her financial worries increase when her mother dies and she cannot pay for the funeral. However she keeps the death from her sister in order to claim their mother's pension. When she asks for Michael's help he becomes aware of the deception. Written by don @ minifie-1

When Christina is taken to court for fraud Michael speaks up for her, resulting in a lenient sentence and reconciliation with sister Mariella. Back in his church he takes confession from new parishioner Roz Demichelis, a gambling addict who has embezzled huge sums from her work place and intends to kill herself. Michael manages to dissuade her but is exhausted and fails to take a call from Helen Oyenusi, whose mentally ill son Vernon is accidentally shot dead by police whilst threatening suicide.
