Chris is relieved to find out that he is not the only black person at his new high school. However, he does run into problems because he is the only non-white student in his homeroom class, and the teacher can't stand him.

In English class, Ms. Rivera assigns the class to do a book report on the novel Invisible Man. Bored by the book, Chris decides to write his report based on the movie The Invisible Man instead. Only after turning in his report does he learn that the movie he watched had no connection to the book he was supposed to read. Nevertheless, Ms. Rivera gives Chris an incomplete instead of failing him because she liked his writing. Chris asks the teacher if she could show movies based on books in class, rather than having the class read books. Since so many of the students are bored in class anyway, Ms. Rivera decides to put Chris's idea into effect. However, when Ms. Rivera is caught showing a movie in class, she is threatened with being fired for departing from the curriculum. The superintendent later decides that showing movies in class is a good idea and Chris and Ms. Rivera's pictures appear in the newspaper - which blows Ms. Rivera's cover as a fugitive from the law, prompting her ... Chris has made one New Year's resolution -- to go to Times Square and see the ball drop at midnight on New Year's Eve. Rochelle, who is preoccupied with complying with New Year's traditions for good luck, tells him he can go only if he is accompanied by a responsible adult. Chris is unable to find anyone who is willing and able to take him until Tasha invites him to come with her mother (Peaches) and Malvo. Rochelle tells Chris that he can't go with Peaches and Malvo, both of whom are ex-convicts. However, Rochelle relents after Peaches gives her a long speech about how she has been rehabilitated. Meanwhile, Julius is stuck in a traffic jam when a man threatens to jump from a bridge. Julius successfully persuades the man to come down by telling him about many other people who had problems but didn't jump off a bridge, ranging from Nelson Mandela to Jermaine Jackson. T.J., a man trying to escape from the police, hands Chris a bag of marijuana to hide and warns Chris that he had better return the drugs when T.J. comes back. Since T.J. knows who Chris is and where he works, Chris enlists Greg's help to find a place to hide the weed. When the police turn up in Chris's home ec class with a drug-sniffing dog, Chris desperately dumps the marijuana into a lasagna he is making. He then learns that the lasagna is to be eaten by the faculty on Friday and has to find a way to avoid getting the teachers high. Meanwhile, Rochelle is uncomfortable because her ex-con coworker Peaches knows much more about using computers than she does, and Tonya sneaks out, against Julius's orders, to go to a listening party for Lisa Lisa's new album.
