In the aftermath of the Season 3 Cliffhanger, at SRU Headquarters, Greg receives a devastating phone call that a member of Team One has been shot: It's Ed. Dr. Toth refuses to let Greg go because he doesn't believe Greg is fit for Duty. After closing the case, Dr. Toth clears Team One for Duty, but he tells Greg that he needs to be more of a leader and not a friend. And when he is found not guilty, a lot of protesters, which includes the boy's parents, converge on the courthouse. The team goes to escort the man. Ed who's almost recuperated drops by to talk to Parker about his future but before they could, they hear of the verdict. They ask Ed to come along. When they get there, things escalate to the point that they can't get out. So while another unit arrives to take care of the crowd, Ed talks to the cop who feels unappreciated. In the commotion of subduing the stabber, the victim escapes from the infirmary taking one of the staff as hostage. The escapee is then identified to have a history of violence and now armed, wants to settle something with his best friend.

The team easily corners juvenile robber Danny Lucic in a sports stadium, but son suspects rightly that Gil Collins, the ex-cop security guard who helped them on spot and needlessly shot the robber at the end, has a deranged agenda. While they work out he never digested being dismissed as SRU candidate or loosing custody of son Jacob, he takes Ed hostage, triggering a complex series of guilt and blame exchanges and culminating in mortal danger for both.
