A builder demolishing a wall finds the body of nine year old Leo Priestley, a friend of Marcella's son Edward, abducted three years earlier. After a fruitless interview with convicted paedophile Phil Dawkins investigations lead to ageing, ailing rock drummer Reg Reynolds, who lives in the flat next door to the murder scene. Marcella visits it alone and is attacked. Factory owner Vince Whitman hits the news for exploiting under-age workers whilst divorced Leslie Evans is concerned by her son Adam's odd behaviour and Marcella freaks out when she sees Edward getting into Jason's new girl-friend Becky's car. After seeing a psychiatrist to account for her black-outs Marcella returns to work, discovering that Reynolds knew Dawkins - who has an alibi for the attack on her - and there is unidentified DNA at Reynolds' flat. She interviews him but he collapses, muttering Find the girl. Meanwhile another boy's corpse is found in the boot of a car, evidence of its owner having been destroyed and pathologists make a disturbing find on Leo's body. The Whitmans launch a children's charity where Vince makes a drunken rant in the presence of Marcella's colleague Tim Williams after being accused of exploiting child workers and Marcella's odd actions impact on her son Edward.
