Cathy's husband David has just died and it is the day of the funeral. Cathy meets son Jason's tactless girlfriend Kelly and has an argument with in-laws Reg and Maureen over what constitutes a buffet. Brother Derek brings his supercilious wife Pauline and, with grief and failure to locate her glasses adding to the pressure, Cathy is grateful to patient friend Michael for his tacit support. On Valentines day Cathy is pleased to get a card from Kelly, who is typically tactless but well-meaning, and Jason. Derek arrives with Pauline to have a takeaway and watch a DVD, followed by Michael, who seems annoyed to see the card from your secret admirer, until he is told who sent it. Cathy is clearing out her garage and encounters Kelly's loud-mouthed mother Carol, come to take away the fridge. She is crass and tactless, even putting Pauline in the shade in the rudeness stakes, whilst the in-laws are typically confused. Cathy also discovers that Carol is dishonest attempting to steal from her and , whilst Michael might have a mysterious online date, his support for Cathy is, as ever, a welcome presence. It is high summer and Cathy prepares to leave her bickering in-laws and Kelly and her crass cousin Debbie to meet an Internet date whom she describes as 'just a friend' with Michael driving her to meet him. After Pauline arrives with a query about her marriage Cathy herself has an admission for the loyal Michael regarding her tryst and Kelly has another confession, bringing her closer to Cathy. Cathy comes down in the morning to find Kelly worrying about a woman Jason has contacted on Facebook and the possibility of his getting a job in Australia and their having to move there. Derek is asleep on the sofa after a night out with Michael and is rather the worse for wear and when Pauline comes round to give him his keys back it is apparent that they are no longer a couple. On New Years Eve Cathy is hosting a small get together for Pauline and Derek, returned together from Mykonos, Maureen - who announces that she wants sex with a black man - and Reg when Kelly and Jason return from the pub following a blazing row regarding the Australian job. They are followed by Carol and Michael - who has spent Christmas with his children - and Kelly's cousin Debbie with her thick boyfriend Ryan. Away from the others Cathy manages to reconcile Kelly and Jason before giving Michael his present and sharing a touching moment after which they join the rest of the family to see in the New Year.
