The story is about how the Cartwright family came to own the Ponderosa and what shaped the family of the series most know from the '50s and '60s.

Joaquin is a Robin Hood to Mexican people but the ranchers don't see him that way. Carlos brings an injured Joaquin to the Ponderosa after being victim to a lynch mob. Adam discovers there is more to being a man than simply turning 21.
