While Gus shivers and Shawn sleuths, Lassiter suffers being teamed up with twelve-fold Academy-failure Goochberg, whose physical impairments are trumped only by her recklessness. Shawn Spencer was ruthlessly trained in observation as a boy by his father Henry, a strict cop, who moved away years ago, to his relief. Shawn never was able to keep a job. Now a TV news item on a high-profile kidnapping in the wealthy McCallum family makes him attempt a longstanding dream, solving crime for a living. So he recruits his shy youth friend Burton 'Gus' Guster to set up an agency. To get access to the police, he poses as a medium, which bully detective Carlton Lassiter finds frustratingly hard to unmask. the case is harder then expected, but cocky Shawn's perseverance pays off. Shawn Spencer is delighted that as soon as he has opened his quirky investigation agency Psych, the police hires him for a new case. Gus is furious to be sneakily forced to join, but delighted with this case, as it's at the national SpellingBee competition, although he later learns Shawn sabotaged his chances to participate as a kid. A contestant has died suspiciously, soon followed by another ad the legendary judge. Attorney general Maxwell demands a discrete investigation into the theft from a hotel safe of his family's heirloom ring just before his son Dylan's wedding with possible gold-digger Bethany Cadman. Shawn can't resist volunteering his services, accepted by the couple, not Carlton Lassiter, yet his suite is invaded as base for an inquest Gus is suckered into because of the state-of-the-art safe. Shawn eagerly poses as medium to get the case of two recently released bank robbers, believed to want the loot by threatening David Morrison Wilcroft's widow Raylene. He suspects the link is a suicide phone charity, but works out the truth just in time to prevent naive ever-helpful rookie Buzz McNab's wedding preparations turning into tragedy. During the city's annual Civil War battle reenactment Carlton Lassiter intensely enjoys commanding dictatorially, one participant falls too soon and deep and stays dead. The inspector dismisses it as a hidden bullet accident, by Shawn enlists himself and Gus to sleuth on a case that isn't officially opened. Shawn Spencer ordered a secretary from a models agency, but the first girl is sexy yet too useless, replacement Leslie a perfect secretary but far too sexy being a man. Shawn is no more inclined than the police to take the case of bachelor Robert, who claims to fear being supernaturally murdered in his haunted home, although his therapist Dr. Blinn actually was already. Even after Shawn discloses their only ghost experience was a hoax, Gus insists to investigate, so they move in as protectors and barely survive an arson attempt. While detective Carlton Lassiter must drive the pregnant captain to hospital, Juliet O'Hara enlists Psych unofficially to start looking before the legal 48 hours pass into the disappearance of well-behaved nerd-knave Breyfogle. Examining his room suffices to realize the teen came into spending money and took two mates, fellow teenage comics-fans Don and Rob, to the nearby triennial convention TriCon. There Shawn performs as psychic and poses of Star Trek star Takei's assistant to snoop with true fan Gus into what turns out to be a planned series of crimes inspired by a comic. Shawn is asked by a woman he went to grade school with to help her father, a former police captain, find who murdered someone... as he's not able to remember either the perpetrator or the victim.

Inspector Lassiter is depressed enough to seriously consider resigning on account of an old case he feels unable to crack as isn't even officially ruled a murder. Shawn decides to save his nemesis by solving it and cuing Lassiter enough to believe he can claim credit. The victim is an astronomer, the observatory project partner of Hugo. Shawn uses pa's gardener plant expertise to find foul, then infiltrates as (utterly inept) planetarium guide, teasing Gus whose secretly admired girl actually works there. Knucklehead Fred Turk believes to be abducted by aliens after the police finds him naked in a field, yet Shawn eagerly takes the case. Shortly after, another man is found their stripped and dumbstruck, later a corpse. Shawn searches for a link between the men, which may be found either in a tanning salon or a speed dating club, where he finds fraud after he, Gus and two cops enter, but neither works out in an obvious way. Shawn is convinced that Sandra Panitch is not only innocently accused of murdering weatherman Jackson Hale but also hopelessly defended by nervous newbie Hornstock, so he offers his and Gus's services as legal consultants, approved even by Lassiter, who reluctantly made the arrest, and starts looking for an alternative suspect in the studio. He even keeps dragging Gus away from his pharmaceutical firm's team building weekend to assist. Henry couldn't convince buddy Bill Peterson to turn to he police to find his missing adult son Brandon, who was evicted for stealing from the family car dealership, so Henry grudgingly recommends Shawn. He soon works out that the knave is desperate to pay off debts from illegal poker games. He finds Brandon, only to hear he pretended to make up just to steal from father's home safe.
