Ten years earlier Nikki helped jail married Tony Hamilton for the attempted murder of his pregnant girlfriend Suzie Banks. Now she and the team are called in when cancer sufferer Max Walsh apparently commits suicide in his bath though Nikki believes he was murdered, along with another cancer victim Irene Dawes, who died in the same way three months earlier. She confides in former colleague Scott King that somebody is trying to discredit her and that an intruder has been in her flat. Evidence suggests this was an old adversary Belinda Roach, who opposed Nikki's testimony in the Hamilton case, but when Nikki visits Belinda she claims that she has been framed and is then killed. Abrasive inspector Pamela Rankin arrests Nikki for Belinda's murder whilst her colleagues gather evidence to prove Nikki's innocence and, released on bail, she questions Scott, who denies any involvement. A visit to the support group attended by the two supposed suicides yields the identity of a mystery man, who comes after Nikki but is shot by police marksmen. In Bosnia in 1995 Alma Begovic and her little daughter Sarah are sole survivors of a massacre. Twenty years later DI Nina Ryman calls the team in when moderate Muslim Amir Aziz is stabbed to death. At the same time Sarah, now a young woman with a baby, arrives in England, a drugs mule, to stay with Alma and younger brother Jakob and Nina discovers that she has been in touch with Amir. Michael Waite of the Counter-Terrorist unit informs the team that Sarah is a jihadist and widow of a leading Daesh member but she has bolted when they call on Alma. As Nina lies in hospital Jack works out that Sarah could not have shot her whilst Sarah's supposedly dead husband Latif tells her that her did not kill Amir. Waite, however, sees him a a prime suspect and Amir's brother Kamal also agrees that the couple are murderers, before he too is killed. As a result Sarah aims to leave the Jihadis, who are planning an attack on a particular building and in thwarting it the police and pathologists must discover the link between Latif and Kamal and save another anti-fundamentalist opposed by Sarah. Released from jail after twelve years for matricide David Sellars is stabbed to death in his flat. Superintendent Mitchell calls in the team, along with Dr Sasha Blackburn, a psychologist of whose rehabilitation group the victim was a member. David had visited cell-mate Joe Sherringham, a child killer given the new identity of Paul Raynott and soon afterwards Joe is killed, along with Ted Blake, whose son Craig he murdered and who had gone to visit Ted to apologize. Ted's estranged wife Sylvie and son Connor had campaigned against Sherringham's release. Now Marcus Chadwell, Joe's manipulative co-defendant and still in jail, announces that he knows who killed Joe. Shadwell leads a group including Sylvie, Sasha, the police and pathologists to the house where he and Joe killed Craig and drops a bombshell by claiming to know the identity of the current killer, a witness at the time now seeking revenge. Sasha finds her position compromised when one of her assistants, ex-lifer Oliver Bright finds out that she is having an affair with Ben Walker, another murderer also on her staff and Walker is the prime suspect when Oliver's wife is slain and Oliver wounded. Helena Lubas is shot dead during a gun battle between her criminal boyfriend and the police and some months later Karim Benzal , who witnessed the shootings from his carpet shop is murdered. Police complaints investigator Rachel Sharpe claims there was a police cover up in the Lubas case, following information given by Karim and, whilst his widow tells Nikki he was being threatened by gangster Sakir, Rachel believes the police killed him. DI Cooke arrests Sakir but Jack's evidence shows that Sakir met a mystery man shortly before Karim's murder. Tim Friend, the officer who shot Helena, is still racked by guilt but his colleagues close rank against Rachel, who is told to drop the case. Cooke is sure Bruno Lubas killed policewoman Jo Keating, his enquiries leading to Lisa Wilson, who witnessed the original shoot-out and hid Bruno's gun, a service she supplies to other gun owners However Nikki and Jack suspect that Bruno has been framed and this seems surer when he is found shot dead, his death made to look like a suicide. Whilst Jack stumbles on an illegal gun trade involving an unlikely culprit it becomes obvious that the real killer is attempting a cover up of their own, putting Jack's life at risk as he goes after them. Kate Blair, her son Dan and partner Chris Chandler are shot dead during a river-side picnic and the evidence points DCI Sally Butcher towards arresting Kate's embittered ex-husband Miles. Chris had taken a photograph of drugs stashed in Miles' club and local resident Claudia Baxter identified him as being in the area. Soon to retire police officer Malcolm Guillam is reminded of the unsolved murder of Karen Myers in the same spot years earlier - before making a grisly and costly discovery. Nikki realizes the family were not the primary targets but were merely observers to another victim's murder. Discovering Malcolm's body they are pursued by his killer, whom Jack overpowers and delivers to Sally, though he says nothing. Claudia gives the police a story but it becomes clear that she is complicit in some nasty goings on for which her house was used and people killed when things went wrong.
