During the American War of Independence, insurgent Ichabod Crane, an English-born professor and civil rights pioneer, is among the pile of victims of a headless, ax-wielding Redcoat. Two centuries later, both are resurrected when their graves are disturbed. Sheriff August Corbin, whose county includes Sleepy Hollow village, is among the latest axed victims. However he leaves notes which are found by his headstrong deputy, lieutenant Abbie Mills, and the arrested, fascinating Ichabod, whom captain Irving orders to be evaluated in a psych ward. Ichabod gets visits from the ghost of his wife Katrina, who reveals being a good witch from an order fighting the evil one in league with the four riders of the Apocalypse, which includes Death, in the shape of the Redcoat. From his wife's cryptic warnings and Sheriff Corbin's notes, which he finds by laying bear a secret passage, Ichabod works out it's the doing of stake-burned black witch Serilda, who can only return to life if she kills the Furth bloodline before the blood-moon. Thomas Grey, a young boy dying from the medieval plague, arrives in Sleepy Hollow. Mastering middle English, Ichabod works out he belongs to the Roanoke earliest English settlers in America, which that disease is believed to have wiped out. rather then accepting being quarantined, which doesn't seem to work anyway, Crane takes his witch-wife's advice to return Thom to the refuge against the purgatory pestilence which was spread by Moloch, as if could allow him to join the riders of the Apocalypse. After a rare day out, allowing Crane and Abbie to relax and bond more personally while contemplating democratization trough baseball, he is abducted while returning home. The sisters make out that a vision warning from Katrina about a 'sin eater' in order to stop the apocalyptic rider of death refers to a living person, Henry Parrish, but he retired as the work drains him completely. Crane meanwhile discusses his moral dilemma when ordered to execute an escaped slave and pamphleteer with his Free Mason abductors, who appeal to his courage again to stop Death by suicide. Now his life is no longer tied to the rider Death's, either of them can kill the other. Ultimately he finds a clue how to set a trap and prevent the Apocalyptic four uniting in Sleepy Hollow, but it's a dangerous game requiring the captain's help. A modern billionaire goes missing after buying the 'ancestral', allegedly haunted mansion of Ichabod's contemporary Lachlan Fredericks, who made it a haven for arts, merriment and safe liberty for all, even Abbie's slave-born ancestors. Ichabod makes the link, so she's found walled-in by a thorny vine, which is awoken by attempts to cut it, while her bodyguard is already killed. The book collection inside strikes Ichabod as identical to his wife's, which a letter snide proves. He wonders about her Covent's witchcraft part in evil taking over. Written by KGF Vissers

Ichabod feels he must find out about his son Jeremy and why Katrina never told him. So he gets the help of Sin-eater Henry Parrish, overcoming his warning. It works, Crane learns that Jeremy was horribly abused in a grim priest's war orphanage until he used his inherited witchcraft to conjure a Golem, while Katrina's powers were bound by her coven, which also disposed of 'dangerous' Jeremy. Moloch wants at all cost Washington's Bible, which presumably contains crucial magical secrets. He demands it as ransom for the captain's daughter, whom he threatens to kidnap and kill by sunset unless it's handed over. Carne, who has it, resists girlish pressure to switch into modern 'camouflage' dress. Having learned from the late sheriff's archive that Abbie's sister was possessed by a body-hopping demon, Ichabod foresees that the captain's family hiding in a safe house is futile and takes cunning precautions. Examining George Washington's Bible and its invisible ink messages, Ichabod works out that the general must have written those four days after his death and taken crucial secrets in the supernatural war to his unknown grave. Pondering any oddities in the light of his independence war experiences and freemasonry traditions and invoking the sin-eater's help, Crane manages to locate and enter the tomb.
