Following Paul's heart attack and temporary passing to the other side, he is now at home recuperating with a new ICD, which is seemingly more complicated than he or Cathy would like. The one benefit of Paul having his heart attack at the insurance company's Christmas party is that they have reinstated the Jamison's medical insurance. With both Paul and Cathy now facing health issues, they decide that they have to make arrangements for a guardian for Adam just in case, who regardless is showing signs that he is growing up. Sean is still mourning the loss of his and Rebecca's relationship in more ways than one. Back on his meds and thus thinking more clearly, Sean believes he needs to get a job to live in Marlene's house over the winter. Andrea has just returned from her trip to Africa, sporting a new name, a new look and a new appreciation for life and her African roots. Her spirituality makes Adam wonder about God. After getting her tattoo, Cathy comes to the realization that she figuratively needs some place to put her emotional baggage. Although she isn't sure if it will be for her since it sounds a little too new ageist, Cathy talks Paul into going to a multi-day seminar at a resort over Valentine's led by Joy Kleinman, self coined as a joyologist. A cancer survivor, Joy came to the realization that it was the negative aspects of her life that caused her cancer, and it was her change of focus to embracing joy that cured her. Paul agreed to go if only for the potential of hotel sex. Cathy and Paul end up having near opposite reactions to Joy's message and methods. But the one for who the seminar has been a total washout ends up with a cathartic moment, which in turn leads to a major revelation. Adam's focus for attending bible group changes when Jesse invites him to a Christian rock concert. In the aftermath, Cathy directs her attention to Adam, with who she tries a little medicinal therapy to bridge their current gap. Home from his latest speaking engagement with Joy, Paul provides Cathy some empty comfort concerning what happened with the Coopers. Each of Paul and Cathy stumble across something the other was hiding, with each deciding to investigate further. Cathy's investigation has some deathly consequences, aided from the ever after.
