Brenda and the Major Crimes unit investigate the murders of a family of four, the grandmother, mother and two children. The father, Victor Rivera, had apparently left for work that morning and, under Brenda's questioning, admits to having an affair that he recently broke off. Lt. Provenza, having his own romantic problems, gets in a foul mood over having been sent to the wrong address on the morning of the shooting. Brenda soon puts it all together, realizing the killers made the same mistake. It's clear that a major drug dealer passed information to have someone killed from jail. Brenda has to figure out how. With all of his assets frozen by the FBI, LAPD believes he may have staged his own kidnapping in an attempt to get access to his money. The chauffeur who met him at the airport, Mario Gomez, is also missing. When they find the limo, the seats are covered in blood but there is no body and no driver. Lt. Tao untangles that mystery while Sgt. Gabriel finds a key clue to the culprit. Meanwhile, Brenda's cat, Kitty, is seriously ill and requires extra special care. Brenda finds herself up against a pretty tough colleague in the form of Capt. Sharon Raydor when Sgt. Gabriel is investigated over a shooting incident. Gabriel was in a bar having a drink with Commander Taylor when they hear gunshots outside. Gabriel doesn't hesitate and rushes outside to find a newspaper vendor shot to death. When he tells a suspect to stop, he hears gunshots and sees flashes and returns fire, critically injuring a young man. Unfortunately for Gabriel, no gun is to be found. Raydor's team is tasked to investigate all shootings involving police officers, and a clash of wills soon develops with Brenda, who not only wants to prove Gabriel innocent but to investigate the news vendor's murder, which she believes may have been racially motivated. Brenda and her team investigate the shooting death of Reggie Gray, a gardener who worked at a community center run by Father Jack, with whom Brenda's had previously had dealings. The shooting is peculiar in many ways. Reggie was a reformed gang member, having served his time, and from all accounts was on the straight and narrow. There are no gun casings at the scene and no one nearby claims to have heard any shots. Four gangs dominate the area, and Reggie had recently painted over some gang graffiti, which turns out to be a dead end. Brenda and her team investigate the shooting of Mark Bernstein, aka Intrigue, who offers counseling on hooking up with hot babes. By the time Provenza and Flynn get there (with Chief Pope accompanying them on a ride-along), everything seems to be well in hand with Det. Richard Tracy, giving them a rundown on what he thinks happened. Pope is suitably impressed and Tracy offers to log in the evidence for them. One problem: there is no Det. Tracy on the force, and the wannabe detective is now going around impersonating the officers with their business cards. He's doing a pretty good job investigating the crime and seems to be one step ahead of everyone, but when they finally get him in custody, Brenda realizes that they need his help. The Major Crimes squad pulls out all the stops to solve the murder of two obviously ambushed patrolmen. Brenda is convinced that teenager Kevin Weber, also found dead at the scene, was part of a gang that killed the policemen. Unfortunateley for her, she comes up against Capt. Sharon Raydor, whose unit is tasked with investigating all cases where a police officer might have discharged his firearm and killed a citizen. Brenda and the team are on the job when a body is found in Elysian Park. The dead man was obviously dragged behind a vehicle, and there is evidence he was tortured in other ways. Andy Flynn recognizes him as a suspect in a murder case from the 1990s. They were sure he had killed two girls, but their bodies were never found and they couldn't get the necessary evidence against him. The investigation was led by a now retired detective, Joey Olin, who is more than happy to help out on the case that he devoted so much time to without a satisfactory result. Since his retirement, he's kept in touch with the dead girls' families, phoning them on the anniversary of their disappearance and generally keeping an eye on the situation. A man who confessed to murder while Brenda was away on her honeymoon gets details of the crime wrong during his allocution, causing Brenda to reopen the case. Her first thought is that he is trying to cover for his schizophrenic son, whose doctor was the victim. Major Crimes has an interesting case on its hands when a large cooler with a body stuffed inside gets delivered to the squad room, shipped by the owner of a storage facility after reporting his suspicions to the police, who didn't respond. They soon identify the dead man as Doug Courtney, a ne'er-do-well who wasn't very reliable and was un-liked by almost everyone who may have cared about him at one time - his parents, girlfriend, landlord and high school best bud. Brenda devises a clever scheme to out the guilty party among them. Meanwhile, she and Fritz must deal with her niece Charlie, who isn't exactly following their house rules. Brenda and the Major Crimes team investigate a schoolyard shooting that may have been a drug deal gone bad. A young Hispanic lad, Tomas DeLeon, is killed and an innocent bystander, another boy named Jake Burrell, is seriously wounded. A large amount of marijuana is found at the scene. From the fancy SUV he was driving, there is little doubt that DeLeon was the dealer; however, in reviewing the physical evidence, the police revise their theory about who was the intended victim. Brenda and Major Crimes are hot on the trail of a serial killer after he attacks and kills a young woman in her home. Witnesses saw a car with Texas dealer plates and Texas Det. Curt Landry flies to LA to brief them on a string of murders that, according to FBI files, could number as high as eighty-five. All of the murders have taken place in communities adjacent to the I-10 and all have followed the same pattern. As both Brenda and Det. Landry aim to collar the culprit, they agree that, once they apprehend the killer, the one with the best case will prosecute. After a wild chase down the highway, they arrest Jesse Ray Moore, and Landry reveals for the first time that Texas has DNA evidence from one of Moore's victims. Brenda feels she's been had and sets out to ensure that Moore isn't extradited by getting him to confess to the crime. His gang member father, Ferdinand, seems unmoved by his son's death, and when police find two more members of the same gang shot dead, they fear either a gang war or an internal power struggle. A bank card found on one of the dead men belongs to Camilla Santiago, and it doesn't take long to learn that she has been missing for several days. Tracing her to a rape treatment center, the truth begins to unfold. Meanwhile, Fritz has a surprise for Brenda, about which she doesn't seem very appreciative. Just as Brenda and Fritz are about to go off on a long anticipated weekend holiday, Brenda learns for the first time that Major Crimes has been looking into a seven-year-old murder that was re-opened after the forensic lab that processed the crime scene evidence was discredited. Lt. Provenza, one of the original investigators on the case, assures Brenda that everything is in order. He's particularly pleased that his old partner, now retired Detective George Andrews, is returning to Los Angeles to help, but he isn't quite prepared for what he sees when George returns as Georgette after sex re-assignment surgery. The DA is prepared to drop the case against Doris Osgood, a home care worker who killed one of her elderly charges, but Brenda decides to stay in L.A. and make sure they get the evidence they need to make the previous conviction stick. Assistant Chief Pope calls in Brenda and the team on a delicate matter when Captain Sharon Raydor believes one of her detectives, Ally Moore, is the victim of spousal abuse. She had seen bruises on Moore's arm and neck, to which Moore couldn't give a logical explanation and refuses to file a complaint. Brenda interviews her but, in the absence of a complaint, hesitates to call in the husband, and that proves fateful. That night, Moore places a 911 call seeking help. Patrol Sgt. Ryan Dunn responds to the call and shoots Moore's husband dead. As Brenda begins to sift through the evidence, she realizes that there is far more going on than meets the eye. At home, meanwhile, Fritz has been particularly grumpy and out of sorts lately and with good reason: he's been offered a promotion which would mean a return to Washington D.C.
