Frankie becomes emotional as the Hecks send Axl off to college, Sue waits for an important call from school, and Brick gets a new cell phone.

Mike tries to help after Frankie doesn't get a response to her texts to Axl, Sue gets an unexpected visit from Darrin, and Brick and his fellow classmates are afraid to use the school bathroom.

Axl is fed up with his college roommate, Sue gets a job so that she can get a car, and Frankie and Mike get bad news about Brick from his middle school principal.

Sue has a Halloween sleepover, and during a game, she thinks she sees the ghost ship of Christopher Columbus. Axl finds he is low-man on the totem pole as a freshman in college. Brick is interested in a girl at school.

Frankie finds comfort from a lost dog after feeling like her family doesn't appreciate her, Axl discovers that he is hopelessly failing 3 classes, and Sue makes the volleyball team so the school can avoid a lawsuit.

Thanksgiving finds the Heck family in turmoil when Axl tries to figure out the perfect time to tell his parents that he dropped three out of his four college classes; Frankie's dad Tag admits to Mike that he lost a lot of money gambling online and won't be able to take wife Pat on a planned cruise; Sue is hiding a shocking secret from her discount shopping excursion with Frankie; Dr. Goodwin and Uncle Rusty's wife and kids show up unannounced for Thanksgiving dinner; and Brick goes to extreme measures to have lime green Jello salad during the feast. Mike is ecstatic knowing his in-laws are not visiting for Christmas. Frankie looks forward to Axl being home, but he has plans to spend all the time with friends. Brick has to sell fund-raiser items. Sue is allergic to the Christmas tree.

A terrified Brick begins sleeping in the kitchen, Derrick Glossner kisses Sue again, and Axl reunites with Boss Co. for a new job.

Sue goes to war with Axl after she discovers he stole her mascot head, Frankie spends time after work with her boss, Mike tries to bond with the dog, and Brick reads an autobiography by Debbie Reynolds for his book club.

With the bus drivers on strike, Principal Barker asks the parents to form carpools to get the kids to and from school. But with time management not being one of Frankie's strong suits, her carpool kids find themselves facing the possibility of being on the receiving end of some tardy slips - which could ruin their chances of being invited to the No Tardy Party. Meanwhile, Axl hits the books and becomes an expert in Astronomy - a class he's not even taking - in order to tutor a hot student; and when Mike receives two IU basketball tickets, he tries to find someone to accompany him to the game, not realizing that Sue really wants to go with him. Frankie discovers via a local blog that the quarry is presenting Mike with an award during a dinner for his 20 years of dedicated service. But Mike, not thinking it's that big of a deal, doesn't want to attend. Meanwhile, after being sat on in class by a guy who didn't know she was even in the chair, Sue attempts to put together a plan to get the students more connected with each other; having imbibed a bit too much at a party the night before, Axl tries to track down the mystery girl who left a message on his phone; and Brick thinks he's totally styling in a purple suit and bolo tie that he found in his cousins' hand-me-down box. Meanwhile, Frankie is livid when she discovers that Axl has been hanging out at the Donahues for the past few days and didn't let her know that he was even in town; and Sue is horrified when she discovers that someone has given her service at Spudsy Malone's a bad review online and consequently, overreacts in her efforts to better please the customers. Sue frantically tries to earn a college scholarship for when she graduates in two years; Frankie hopes to correct a mistake at work without her boss finding out; Brick demands a formal apology from Mike after a misunderstanding.

Frankie decides to hold office hours for the kids to discuss their needs in order to unclutter her brain, and Mike becomes worried when Darrin starts spending all his time at their house with Sue.

Rusty joins Mike and Brick on a road trip to Brick's spelling bee, Frankie helps Axl find his missing dorm desk so she can get her deposit back, and Sue enters a contest at Ehlert Motors to win a car.

The Hecks have an eventful road trip to Walt Disney World when Axl wins a bet with his parents, Sue demands to take a driving shift, and Brick asks to take a detour to North Carolina to visit his online girlfriend.

The Hecks arrive at Walt Disney World in Orlando, only to discover that their reservations and tickets are for Disneyland in California. And their vacation only goes downhill from there.
