David Sutton is a drifter from the east headed to Medicine Bow. He stops at a homestead for water and meets Saranora who wants him to take her with him but the owner runs David off. In Medicine Bow David is partially responsible for an accident in the saloon resulting in Trampas breaking his leg and David losing his swamper job. David arrives at Shiloh asking to work in place of Trampas as compensation. However, ranch hand Coley never forgives David for Trampas getting hurt as he counted on Trampas to work with him during the wild mustang roundup. Saranora runs away and ends up at Shiloh looking for David telling everyone they are married. Dan Sheppard and his son Jeremy arrive in Medicine Bow via a private rail car to photograph the west at Shiloh. Dan takes pictures of life on Shiloh while Jeremy uses their studio on the rail car to take pictures of local customers. Della Price's dressmaker suggests she have pictures taken. Jeremy shows the resulting pictures to Dan who realizes his old sweetheart Della is in Medicine Bow. She is a widow with a ranch caught in a bidding war between an oil speculator and the local ranchers who are afraid of the negative aspects of the oil industry. The primary source of water for the local ranches will be polluted if oil wells are allowed on her ranch. Unknown to everyone her foreman Spector is working with the oil speculator Carstairs to cover gambling losses he incurred with the ranch's money. Ben finds her and she convinces him to help her return to Shiloh but they become lost in the mountains when he tries a shortcut and horseless until The Virginian and David finds them. Elizabeth uses Ben as a crutch during her blindness but also falls in love with him. However, Ben is planning to kill Trampas when he arrives and then leave so initially he tries to avoid Elizabeth. The Virginian and Trampas are close to the Canadian border delivering cattle and forced to wait at the remote Inn of the Weary Trapper for payment. While trying to locate the inn, they encounter four French trappers who say they have never heard of the inn. They find the inn which is managed by an ex-Canadian Louis Boissevain in exile and a his fiancé Suzanne Mayo who scammed Trampas several years earlier for a large amount of money. After a meal they retire to their room. The four trappers arrive but go to a shed with Louis to privately discuss their business. They have come to convince Louis to return to Canada to lead a new revolt of the Metis. Later, Trampas comes downstairs to talk to Suzanne. He learns she has gone to prison and lost her son to foster parents in Fargo. She asks Trampas to keep her secret. A man Sturdevant arrives and is followed by the trappers who take Trampas hostage. Rafe Judson, a Shiloh ranch hand, finds himself being mistaken for the outlaw Wally McCullough. Ben Robbins riding by Shiloh spots Rafe and reports him to Sheriff Abbott who arrests Rafe at Shiloh. Rafe is able to clear himself when he realizes he was branding cattle with Trampas and The Virginian at the time of the stagecoach holdup. The real Wally McCullough and his girlfriend Angie are holding up near Medicine Bow in a remote cabin until the heat dies down. They learn about the confusion from an article in the Medicine Bow newspaper. When Rafe learns he will lose the option on a ranch for which he has been saving, he decides to take advantage of the confusion and hold up the stage himself when he learns it will be carrying a $10,000 payroll. Clay's hope is that she can use the education to help her people bridge the gulf between the white and the Shoshone worlds. At the same time Tza'Wuda who was her childhood sweetheart has worked at Shiloh learning ranching. Clay is providing him with stock to start his own ranch on the reservation. He is anxiously awaiting Nai'Be return as he hopes to marry her. However, she is conflicted on her future. The school taught her the white life but ignored her Shoshone background which she came to ignore to fit in with the other girls. Now she is unsure of her future. Adding to the problems is the fact water rights on the Shoshone land has been granted to rancher McKinley forcing the Shoshone village to move. An anthrax outbreak is killing Shiloh cattle and threatening the neighboring ranches. The neighbors are wanting to destroy the Shiloh cattle and burn the land to kill the outbreak. Grainger ordered a new vaccine for anthrax that is to arrive the next day. Walker, a bounty hunter, and his female prisoner Ruby show up at Shiloh looking for horses. They are chasing the Johnny Colton gang which held up a stage which turns out to be the one with the vaccine on it. David Sutton and The Virginian go with them to retrieve the vaccine. They find that the gang took the stage and contents with them. They locate the stage but the contents were moved to a spring wagon with the trail headed toward the outlaw town Misadventure. The rules of Misadventure are to mind your own business which The Virginian violates. He makes friends with the saloon singer Claire who tells him where the gang is staying. Trampas drops in to visit a childhood friend,Jason Crowder, at River Oaks, Nebraska. Jason's foreman drives Trampas away but in River Oaks Trampas runs into Jason and the foreman. Jason is elated to see his old friend and even more so when Trampas mortally wounds a man trying to shot Jason. Trampas finds that Jason is a successful businessman and engineer who is now married to the beautiful Anne. Jason is working on a project to dam part of the valley to control flooding and open new lands. After their experience in River Oaks, Jason asks Trampas to go to work for him. Jason asks his beautiful wife Anne to give Trampas a tour of their ranch followed by an offer of a job as his foreman saying Hudson wants to move on but Trampas senses things are not as they seem after talking to Anne and Hudson. The Virginian contacts an Army patrol but they are unable to help but one soldier suggests she may be suffering from a fear induced condition. The activity of Jingo and The Virginian allow her to slowly begin to communicate as they search her belongings for a clue to her identity. A lone man Caine Ellis runs into the same Army patrol. After mentioning he is looking for a woman, they mention the report by The Virginian. Ellis arrives at Jingo's cabin with a lame horse asking to stay until his horse can travel. During the encounter Martha asks David to be engaged to her until Tiny who David mistakes for a diminutive store clerk leaves town. Trampas knows Tiny and tries to warn David but ultimately takes advantage of the situation at David's expense. The charade turns into a massive problem for both of them as word spreads and Tiny decides to stay for their wedding. When the people of Medicine Bow learn of Hammel's arrival, many of the residents with skeletons in their closets believe he is after them. Hammel tells The Virginian that he is waiting for the 2:30 pm stage but the Virginian believes he is after someone. One by one Hammel indicates he is not after various citizens of Medicine Bow. Visits to the general store and saloon has various residents scared and results in Hammel winging a man in the arm with a shot. With the sheriff out of town on business, The Virginian makes repeated visits to the local Judge looking for a way to restrain Hammel until the stage leaves but he fails. David has spent considerable time in the Medicine Bow Rocky Mountain Saloon with Ellen Jones. Sensing an opening, Case Buchanan steps in to steal Ellen from David which leads to David finding himself in a feud with Case Buchanan over Ellen. The Virginian runs into an old friend Bill Burden who along with two other men are returning money from selling the combined herds of several small ranchers. The Virginian looking for horses and Bill leave together and spend the night talking about old times when The Virginian lived with them during a winter. Upon returning home Bill is accused of robbery and murder. Bill tells his son, Dan, to go ask The Virginian to come immediately to Socorro Creek to clear him. The Viriginian is delayed a day by Shiloh business but still arrives before the scheduled trial. However, when he arrives at Socorro Creek he finds his friend lynched and a very unfriendly reception. The Virginian is determined to learn the truth while Kate still has feelings for the Virginian as he had for her. The Virginian has to try to keep Dan in check who feels he must avenge his dad plus he must determine the truth about what happened by questioning all the principals as the key witness against Bill turns up dead. David Sutton quits Shiloh after he and Trampas have a run in. On the road David stops to help a young woman with an injured leg but finds himself robbed of his clothes and horse. Walking he spots a horse and clothes so he puts them on and rides to Buffalo Springs. The screams of a woman brings the Sheriff who arrests him for robbing the bank. His clothes, horse and height match one of the robbers. Trampas follows him to Buffalo Springs where he spots a man in the saloon in David's clothes. A fight breaks out landing Trampas in jail in the same cell with David. The real robbers are children of banker Nat Trumbull and saloon owner Imogene Delphinia who split the town. Josephine Delphinia hearing about David goes to the jail and with some cooperation from David has him released. David pays the bar damages allowing Trampas to be released but both learn the truth and find themselves involved with the kids activities leading to comedic actions by everyone including the inept sheriff. Denny Todd is headed north for a job and lands in Medicine Bow when his horse throws a shoe. When he starts a fight with two men who rode over him outside town, he is joined by Trampas as the two men from the Kimbro ranch were picking on Trampas as well. There is a feud between the Kimbro ranch and Shiloh over the ownership of a waterhole that is being settled in court. After the fight Denny learns the Graingers are at Shiloh. Denny lived with them for three years as a child after they found him in Texas. He had escaped the Apaches after they orphaned and took him captive. Clay and Holly welcome him into their home again. After a cowboy plays a prank on Trampas but catches Clay in it at a party, Denny severely beats the cowboy nearly killing him. Denny saves Clay from a rock slide but uses it as an excuse to help Clay in his fight over ownership of the waterhole. Trampas takes Abbott to Shiloh where a party is occurring. They decide to let the Shiloh men search for McKinley while Elizabeth tends to Abbott at Shiloh. The next morning Clay leads a group of men but they have to split up due to two sets of overlapping tracks. The Virginian, Trampas, and Dave Sutton track down McKinley at a remote cabin with his wife and son. McKinley is exhausted and starved so they stay overnight. Her father has asked her to take a six week hiatus from seeing Peter Bowers who she wants to marry but her father does not trust him. As usual Trampas takes no time in asking Eileen to attend a local dance with him as Elizabeth predicted. Shortly after she arrives, Eileen and Elizabeth return from a ride. As they approach the bunk house Eileen sees Peter who has followed her and taken a job as a cowhand at Shiloh. That night Peter uses bird calls to ask Eileen to come out and talk to him. Elizabeth seeing their meeting and not knowing who Peter is ashamed of Eileen shunning her until Eileen confesses who Peter is. The next day Trampas sees what he believes is Peter trying to force his attentions on Eileen so he breaks it up. Eileen eventually tells him the situation putting him in the middle as well. Trampas is sent by stagecoach on a cattle buying trip. At a way station two soldiers and a payroll join the stage and they are told there may be Arapaho Indian trouble ahead. When the coach stops for rest and water, Trampas finds Jason Adams standing in the river over the dead body of the ferryman Hank Simpson from Diablo Crossing where the stage is headed. Adams says he found the body after having to shoot his horse and hoping to catch the stage. However, Trampas is very suspicious of Adams as he knew the ferryman. At Diablo Crossing which is a ghost town falling down from neglect they find the ferry destroyed and Bud and Marcy McLister who are brother and sister. Bud having heard about the Arapaho takes a shot at them until he learns who they are. They are forced to stay in Diablo Crossing until they can repair the ferry to get away from possible Indian attack. Another cave-in thwarts efforts to dig her out. While Elizabeth helps her, Claire mentions she is an orphan whose dad was killed in a mine accident in California twenty years earlier. Charles was killed in a mine disaster in California and Clay has no knowledge of him other than his death after Charles left Texas. Elizabeth upon returning to Shiloh looks for pictures of Charles and discusses the meeting with Clay. Because Claire's initials match those of Charles, Elizabeth wonders if she is Charles' daughter. Luke Nichols hitching a ride with the Widow McCloud arrives at Shiloh searching for Trampas. He and Trampas were cell mates in prison when Trampas was sentenced to hang for a murder. They escaped prison together with plans to go to Canada. Trampas turned himself in and was cleared of the murder while Luke went to Canada where he waited for Trampas to join him. Spotted in Canada Luke has been tracked by Bracken, a bounty hunter, tracing him to Trampas. Luke soon realizes Trampas is content with his life at Shiloh so he decides to leave. Trampas tracks Luke down but realizes he can't stay at Shiloh. He decides to hide Luke with the cold natured Widow McCloud who lives alone. Bracken finds him and blackmails Trampas for Luke's freedom asking for $1000. The Virginian tells Trampas it won't work but Trampas tries to raise the money by selling his rifle and saddle and using the proceeds to play poker. The Virginian encounters a stranger, Garrison, on a trip when both are victims of separate robberies by the same trio of outlaws. Garrison is very standoffish with everyone. Several of the Shiloh hands go to town to celebrate the engagement of Sam Marish to Sue Willis, the daughter of neighboring rancher Arthur Willis. A drunk Sam asks Garrison to drink with him but Garrison declines and eventually punches the aggressive Sam. Garrison tries to find a job in Medicine Bow but is rejected due to his personality. However, The Virginian finds him a reliable person and hires him at Shiloh. When Sam Marish is murdered and Willis is shot and robbed, Garrison is thought by the community to be guilty based on his actions and the fact he was at Willis' home alone delivering a bill of sale to Willis from Grainger. The local newspaper reporter Laura doesn't help when she writes a column all but declaring Garrison guilty to the dismay of The Virginian. However, The Virginian is not so sure but the ...
