The police are investigating the beating death of 24 year-old Monica Albreath whose body was found in a dumpster in the alley behind where she worked. Catherine isn't supposed to be working cases while the shooting investigation from her previous case clears her, but she can't help herself. She contacts Schaeffer - another no-no since he has yet to be deposed in her shooting case - to get his views and his take on a message found at the scene - 'I AM' written in the victim's blood. He thinks the killing was a spontaneous act and that the message was written by the victim. Thomas confide only to his dairy that he's afraid to continue studying Catherine, being convinced her first killing, albeit a serial killer, was a test starting her off to become one. Blinded by her own abuse frustration, Catherine initially refuses to look for another suspect the father Robert Walker, respectable friend of the commissioner's son, when his tortured wife and kids' corpses are found at home. Luckily Bisgaard gets a profile from Thomas, who disagrees and finds evidence it was a stalker camping inside before trying to replace the father, whose corpse is later found. Alas his nocturnal 'recontruction' at home convinces Thomas's wife Benedicte he can't be trusted anymore with their doting son, whom he forgot t pick up once more, so she decides to move out. An ex-con pest exterminator whose fingerprints were found is arrested, but has an alibi while the killer strikes again in another home, causing Catherine to be called on duty before she can again seduce her happily ... This turns out to fit the designer drug MO of the life-jailed serial killer who was Thomas's first book subject. During a new jail interview, Thomas is convinced their are more victims and a way to kill again, which threatens his family, so son Johny and his mother are hastily sent to relatives out of town. Thomas worked out the 19 months cycle of the 'Space Cowboy', who is getting even crueler with the next abducted couple, and inspires Bisgard contacting the serial killer via his drug dealer Harland Rey, who is pressed into arranging an extra deal in a natural reserve. After her mother's funeral, Catherine deserts the stakeout with Jerry Molbeck, who is therefore grimly attacked, to attempt preventing Howard getting a night alone with pre-teen Matthew Volper, his big brother program charge, believing it's an abuse plan and assuming her brother's absence means he's dead. Bisgaard covers once more for Catherine, using drug 'dealer' Harland Rey as a lure, but the Space Cowboy captures him to be fatally tortured by cutting to pieces, then seizes another couple, whose escape is set up as an explosive cover-up. Jerry Molbeck survives emergency surgery, but Jenses having abandoned her partner for an illicit stake-out means Bisgaard looses his promotion, she's suspended again and the case is handed to an incompetent FBI agent. Thomas volunteers to act as bait by posing as profiler who ridicules the serial killer.
