Canaby was found barely alive in the desert by two men from a nearby town but when they went looking for the rest of the Canaby train they found everyone dead along with the journal of Lowe. After reading the journal they assumed Canaby was totally at fault based on Lowe's opinion. Unknown to them Lowe was the one who left Canaby for dead and Canaby never refuted the issue as the locals ran him out of town. Duke learns about it after all the goods have been sold so he runs the men off. Upon hearing about it McIvor suggests Duke should have arrested the men and confiscated the goods. After Charlie and Barnaby find two soldiers staked out Indian style McIvor reveals his identity and confiscates the items, much to Bill's displeasure as the people are not compensated. However, when McIvor informs the Colonel in charge at nearby Fort Chacon of this, he is ordered to stop his investigation and soon finds himself court-martialed when his West Point roommate betrays him. It becomes obvious that Zeb's eyesight is not what it used to be while out scouting with Duke. As the train nears Sacramento it prepares to disband. The wagon train has survived births, deaths, marriages, and seven Indian attacks. Many friends and rivalries have been created. The families are from different cultures and backgrounds but they have meshed to make it this far but there are always last minute issues that crop up such as Heather Browne who needs a C-section but the only doctor is afraid to perform it and an old dying man who wants Chris to ensure his last wishes are followed.
