Returning to Los Angeles after escorting a prisoner to another State, Lieutenants Provenza and Flynn pick up two attractive - and much younger - flight attendants, Ashley and Linda; however, when Provenza gets to Ashley's apartment, he finds a dead man in her bathtub. The dead man is Jose Coto, who has several drug-related convictions. The autopsy reveals Coto probably died from a fall in the tub, though there is evidence he had been struck with a baseball bat at some point. Curt Landry flies to LA to brief them on a string of murders that, according to FBI files, could number as high as eighty-five. All of the murders have taken place in communities adjacent to the I-10 and all have followed the same pattern. As both Brenda and Det. Landry aim to collar the culprit, they agree that, once they apprehend the killer, the one with the best case will prosecute. After a wild chase down the highway, they arrest Jesse Ray Moore, and Landry reveals for the first time that Texas has DNA evidence from one of Moore's victims. Brenda and the team are on the job when a body is found in Elysian Park. The dead man was obviously dragged behind a vehicle, and there is evidence he was tortured in other ways. Andy Flynn recognizes him as a suspect in a murder case from the 1990s. They were sure he had killed two girls, but their bodies were never found and they couldn't get the necessary evidence against him. The investigation was led by a now retired detective, Joey Olin, who is more than happy to help out on the case that he devoted so much time to without a satisfactory result. Since his retirement, he's kept in touch with the dead girls' families, phoning them on the anniversary of their disappearance and generally keeping an eye on the situation. Richard Tracy, giving them a rundown on what he thinks happened. Pope is suitably impressed and Tracy offers to log in the evidence for them. One problem: there is no Det. Tracy on the force, and the wannabe detective is now going around impersonating the officers with their business cards. He's doing a pretty good job investigating the crime and seems to be one step ahead of everyone, but when they finally get him in custody, Brenda realizes that they need his help. Brenda and her team investigate the shooting death of Reggie Gray, a gardener who worked at a community center run by Father Jack, with whom Brenda's had previously had dealings. The shooting is peculiar in many ways. Reggie was a reformed gang member, having served his time, and from all accounts was on the straight and narrow. There are no gun casings at the scene and no one nearby claims to have heard any shots. Four gangs dominate the area, and Reggie had recently painted over some gang graffiti, which turns out to be a dead end. Claire thinks she can help them by telling what she sees, but while a skeptical Provenza thinks it's all nonsense, Mike Tao isn't so sure. Brenda investigates the murder of a young woman who had just recently moved to Los Angeles. The crime was interrupted by the police who were answering a prowler call. They arrest a suspect, Chris Dunlap, whom they find hiding up a tree, but he has already called his lawyer Philip Stroh and refuses to say anything. As they look deeper into the case, they realize that there have been a string of rapes of young blonde women - mostly new arrivals - and in every case, Dunlap had made a delivery to their homes. Stroh has defended Dunlap before and offers to plea bargain this time around. In return for a lighter sentence, Dunlap will identify his partner in the crimes. He also wants to see all of the evidence they have accumulated. Brenda is dead set against both the deal and letting Stroh look at the evidence but she is overruled by the DA. A review of his credit cards shows he had joined an Internet club where married people can arrange liaisons. They identify the man in the car as Keith Reyes, whose unusual occupation fools many on the squad, including Det. Sanchez, who is still on limited duties for refusing to undergo therapy. At the Medical Examiner's insistence, Brenda and her team look into the death of Jeff Crawford, a recovered drug addict with a $2 million insurance policy, who owed money to his brother Ed and his ex-wife Dana (suing him for back alimony) but who left it all to the church through which he found religion. The police determined that Jeff took his own life, but the autopsy suggests otherwise. Pastor Paul Hicks says he was on the road to leading a good Christian life and living in a church-owned apartment. He had even asked his girlfriend (recovering cancer patient Beth Gibson) to marry him, which she refused to do until she recovered. Brenda, with her own wedding now less than a month away, has her own challenges to deal with, including placating her visiting parents.
