The men return from moving the cattle as it is payday and they are ready to go to town for a night of celebration. Trampas has a date he has been looking forward to. Clay and Holly are working in the house waiting for Elizabeth to return from riding for dinner but she is missing. Realizing the Graingers are worried, The Virginian and Trampas go to the house to wait with them instead of going to town. When her horse arrives alone with a broken rein and severe scratches, Clay and The Virginian ride out to search but are stopped by nightfall and the arrival of a bad storm. Trampas is sent by stagecoach on a cattle buying trip. At a way station two soldiers and a payroll join the stage and they are told there may be Arapaho Indian trouble ahead. When the coach stops for rest and water, Trampas finds Jason Adams standing in the river over the dead body of the ferryman Hank Simpson from Diablo Crossing where the stage is headed. Adams says he found the body after having to shoot his horse and hoping to catch the stage. However, Trampas is very suspicious of Adams as he knew the ferryman. David Sutton quits Shiloh after he and Trampas have a run in. On the road David stops to help a young woman with an injured leg but finds himself robbed of his clothes and horse. Walking he spots a horse and clothes so he puts them on and rides to Buffalo Springs. The screams of a woman brings the Sheriff who arrests him for robbing the bank. His clothes, horse and height match one of the robbers. Trampas follows him to Buffalo Springs where he spots a man in the saloon in David's clothes. A fight breaks out landing Trampas in jail in the same cell with David. The real robbers are children of banker Nat Trumbull and saloon owner Imogene Delphinia who split the town. Josephine Delphinia hearing about David goes to the jail and with some cooperation from David has him released. An anthrax outbreak is killing Shiloh cattle and threatening the neighboring ranches. The neighbors are wanting to destroy the Shiloh cattle and burn the land to kill the outbreak. Clay's hope is that she can use the education to help her people bridge the gulf between the white and the Shoshone worlds. While trying to locate the inn, they encounter four French trappers who say they have never heard of the inn. An injured cougar is killing calves on Shiloh so The Virginian sends Tramps to hunt the cougar. While hunting, Trampas encounters a lost and sick teenager who calls himself Seth. Trampas tends to him and adopts him as an assistant on the rest of the hunt. Although Seth stays with Trampas, he occasionally takes side trips unknown to Trampas. The broken bones heal but the arm and hand are numb with no feeling or control. Dr. Spaulding calls in a specialist who believes a nerve in his shoulder was affected during the accident. He feels an operation is needed with no guarantee of success plus the chance of infection and losing the arm. A meeting at Shiloh of the local ranchers erupts into a shouting and pushing match as they argue about how to handle their traditional route to market being blocked by the homesteaders. The detour adds 50 miles hurting the cattle and taking more time. Tom Tallman and his foreman Abe Yeager are the most vocal about fighting while Clay wants to avoid a range war saying the homesteaders have a right to be there. Tallman allows Yeager to hire Jed Matthews for his gun to come to Medicine Bow to fight homesteaders blocking the pass. A trio of soldiers are transporting a prisoner across Shiloh property due to a lack of water when they learn after a run in with Trampas it appears the prisoner has scarlet fever. A private runs off with the horses leaving two feuding troopers a foot. Elizabeth and Holly Grainger find the prisoner and troopers stranded inadvertently helping the prisoner escape when Elizabeth runs up to see who is in the wagon. The four walk to Shiloh with the troopers in irons. The Graingers are concerned especially with Elizabeth contracting scarlet fever while Trampas helps the two soldiers who have their own internal feud try to recapture the prisoner. However, Trampas is plagued with flashbacks of his own history with scarlet fever killing his mother and brother. The soldiers are more concerned with killing the prisoner to cover up their mistakes while Trampas wants to safely recapture the prisoner who will do anything to prove his meddle. At the bank he receives the $100,000 for the herd converting it to a bank draft on the spot. However, the bank is robbed as soon as he leaves the bank making the bank draft worthless. Being on the border the local law is unable to help as the thieves head into Canada.
