Bones meets Dr. Camille 'Cam' Saroyan, an ex of Booth and recently created the first-ever head of forensics at the Jeffersonian, at the site of a train/car crash with three fatalities, including US senator Paula Davis and Wall Street tycoon Warren Lynch, who was dead at least six hours earlier, and whose firm Lynchpin International was about to face SEC proceedings, likely to make his stock plummet - an opportunity for stock short-selling worth many millions. Lynch was also on Mexican heroin with the boosting narcotic fentanyl and found out as serially unfaithful by his wife Brianna. Lynch's P.I. Rick Turco says he was hired to investigate a yet unknown blackmailer. Booth traces the heroin to petty dealer Eddie Bean. Vince McVicar, the pig farmer who killed Bones' mother, is himself murdered in jail; his killer admits to have been hired by her own father, Max Keenan. In Delaware bay, the decomposed corpse is found of Carlie Richardson, who had been missing for a year, her husband Kyle was released from custody because there was no evidence/body to convict him at that time. She was brutally beaten up and pregnant, but finding a fresh water fish proves that the body was moved. Booth meanwhile worries if his ex Rebecca Stinson's new boyfriend, Drew, is a good influence on their 4 year-old son Parker. Bones still mistrusts her new department chief Dr. Camille Saroyan. Kyle Richardson has fled, hitting his present girlfriend Karen Tyler, according to her to save her the risks of coming with him, she is soon caught on several lies. It's identified as Dylan Crane, an honor student from a good suburban home who went missing three weeks earlier with his girlfriend, Kelly Morris, who is in foster care. Dylan died from a high fall. His parents assure the gang he wasn't suicidal, but admit they forbade his relationship with Kelly. Conversely, Morris's parents thought Dylan a good influence on her-- encouraging her to return to school--and their younger son, Alex. Food traces on Dylan suggest a Russian restaurant. Social workers Kevin and Fran Duncan show the squat warehouse where they saw the couple; a kid running away in Dylan's sweatshirt calls Kevin Duncan a pervert, he has a record. Brennan, once in foster-care, learns that experience shaped her inability to trust people, and remains defensive of Kelly despite rust and nail polish traces on the pipe Dylan got a blow from. A man's body in a tub full of lye is hard to identify, except for its brittle bone disease and paternity. However it fits two sets of father and sibling cases: electrician Larry Turner has a daughter with teacher Lila Turner and Lawrence Seaver has a son, Ray, with Gayle Seaver. Apparently both mothers ignored his double life and bigamy. Meanwhile the team wonders about Booth's feelings for his own son Parker's mother, Rebecca Stinson, who rejected his marriage proposal. Chop sticks worn in a woman's hair point to a Chinese restaurant, where the wives met and discovered that Larry/Lawrence made a third woman, Chloe Daniels, pregnant, yet the trio claims Larry killed himself. An explosion next to a cocktail party kills several participants to an international drug cartel fight conference. The fatal victims include a priest, an Ecuadorian prosecutor and, in smithereens, waitress Lisa Winnaker, who turns out to have been raped and murdered before the explosion, which was not a bomb but probably surprised the arsonist. Lisa dated Colombian judge Dolores Ramos's boisterous son Antonio, who also enjoys diplomatic immunity, a privilege jealously 'babysitted' by State Department official Alex Radswell, a midget who according to Bones abuses sympathy. The team is particularly disgusted to find the corps of a 9-year old girl, almost completely decomposed after three months in a huge interstate water supply maze. It's Brianna Swanson, a long missing top contestant in beauty pageants for children, whose mother Jackie Swanson was so obsessed with winning that she not only resorted to adult make-up (the reconstruction looked about age 30) but also excessive diet, teeth bleaching, dangerous doses of growth hormone and even deliberate mutilation by a permanent, ever-tighter corset. There's a tape of the Jackie furious at Brianna's refusal to keep competing half an hour before her disappearance. The father, Jackie's ex Dave Swanson, is a roof worker, fitting the bitumen traces of which were found on the corps. Zack finds traces of post-mortem abuse. Jackie's alibi and her claim that Brianna loved competing are confirmed, Brianna was mean, insulted and stole from fellow contestants. Angela finally accepts to date Hodgkins, but only to get ... However circling vultures lead them also to a nearby, far fresher and younger female corpse, Billy Morgan. Her husband Don Morgan, who reported her missing fearing she left him after he lost his job, has a broken thumb, mob methods for a shark-loan for her breast-implants to start 'exotic dancing'; Billy's corpse has such extensive, partially defensive injuries incurred over a long period that she must have been bare-knuckle-boxing in illegal 'ultimate fighting'. Don says he thought she stopped boxing after losing her license a year earlier. Booth braves his cured gambling addiction (craps) to question mobster Lou Mackey in his casino, where he meets Frankie Daniels, a still-playing fellow Gulf war veteran. A reported find of 'two aliens' in a large vat proves the gruesome grave of human twin boys, Ryan and Matthew 'Matty' Kent, missing since years, burned at 300°. It's again the work of the Gravedigger, a serial kidnapper-murderer who buries his victims and demands a royal ransom, no negotiation. The twins had not enough air to survive even if the ransom had been delivered as demanded, but after examining Matthew's serious fracture and stun-gun wounds, the team concludes it was a car crash, the Gravedigger was surprised by the second twin and has no larger vat available. Now the Gravedigger kidnaps both Bones and Hodgins from the Jeffersonian parking-lot, asking $8,000,000, well within his family's means. Zach discovers why the vat contains so much blood: Ryan severed his own artery with a pen, to give his brother more air and hence time. A forest ranger shows Booth and Bones the decapitated body of a young man found by hikers, at the site near talismans and killed in the way of the 18th-century legendary murdering witch Maggie Cinders, with an ax from her period, handle in an extinct birch species. It's missing film student Graham Hastings, found lying on his video camera, which recorded his panic with assistant Lori Mueller just before his bloody death. The project's surviving member, Brian Andrews, now gets the $30,000 film grant he originally lost out on against Graham and the co-production with their film professor Nate Gibbons is even selected for the Sundance film festival. Lori was quickly returned to institutional psychiatry. Graham's brother, Will Hastings, actually charms Bones. Dendrology allows Hodgins and Montenegro to identify the murder spot in the wood from Graham's elaborate video shooting, a scary task making her cuddle up to him. An ex-FBI agent is crucified and torched on top of a hotel with a message inside his throat which re-opens a case from the 70s that sent an innocent man to prison. The case has ties that go deep inside the FBI, endangering Bones and her brother Russ, and risking Booth's career. Bones receives a visit from an old friend of their father Max Keenan, who is holding back a secret. When Booth takes Bones to jail for the identification of a corpse badly damaged in a prison fire, she and Zach find it's a fireman's, made to resemble that of the cell's inmate, serial murderer Howard Epps (see episodes The Man on Death Row and The Blonde in the Game). Howard has escaped, calls the Jeffersonian and makes good on his threats, giving word pun-clues but keeping ahead and getting to various members of the team or their loved ones, such as leaving a victim's severed head in a fridge with a hidden explosive charge releasing a mysterious, potentially fatal poison during the autopsy or proving he can approach Booth's kid son Parker at the playground, the best way to terrify a devoted heroic father. Booth tries to put the pressure on Howard by arresting his disgusting fat, abusive mother Marianne Epps, with whom he has a mutually sick relationship, but the cruelly clever chain of dangers continues, right to the last surprise act... Before they arrive, Booth is so irritated by an ice-cream cart's nagging 'music' that he shoots the clown-shaped loudspeaker; the FBI sends him to frightfully erudite and suave British psychotherapist Dr. Gordon Wyatt's home, where the perfectionist control freak's professional and private frustrations, including Epps's fatal balcony fall, are handled in a frustrating and yet calming way, while building a garden barbecue... Meanwhile Bones continues with Special Agent Tim 'Sully' Sullivan, whose apparent lack of interest and dedication makes her appreciate their friend and colleague Booth more, decides to ship the whole alligator to the Jeffersonian for examination and learns about Sully's varied qualifications and other options in life besides an FBI career, unlike totally focused Booth. Due to this, Brennan must make an important decision about her team. Meawnhile, Booth, although cleared by Dr. Wyatt to use his gun, must continue to meet with the psychiatrist. Then Jim Lopata is killed and duped in the harbor, exactly like the first fictitious victim, but Bones figures out the victim abused his wife Connie, and her protective brother Greg Braley has no alibi. Then a second copy-victim is found, devoured by rats in a pet shop: unfaithful wife Sadie whose husband Ashton Keller stands to inherit her fortune. Both victims were shot with the same gun. Booth checks Bones's ex-stalker Oliver Laurier, and finds suspicious 'toys' for creative role playing, but he's just looking for attention. Then the third victim is found, eaten by fire-ants: Bones's publicist Ellen Laskow, near the book signing; her slavish assistant Hank Belden says she was secretive about her lesbian lovers; he now succeeds her. Bones resumes her holiday, 'no bones, no Bones', boating with Sully who considers moving onto it permanently. Hair and a genetic disease indicate an Asian, about 20, immigrated- identified through the Homeland Security database as Li Ling Fan, on a fiancée visum, but her partner, Drew Harper, a fence specializing in Asian objects, says they mutually called off the wedding a month ago and escapes. Booth gets Bones who finds sinologist Professor Shi Jon Chen, who introduces them to old Mai Zhang, whose 40 year-old son is a candidate for minghun, an old Chinese tradition for bachelors of reburial with the bones of a posthumous 'bride'... Water erosion from a broken water main reveals a body which is too young to belong in St. Agatha parish's cemetery. The Jeffersonian team examines possible causes of death, and thus contracts a fungal infection. Spurred by Bones' irreverent faith-bashing, Booth convinces Bones to seek Dr. Gordon Wyatt's help to analyze and fix their stressed relationship. Young parishioners identify the body as the late priest who used to assist in the parish. He survived stabbing and shooting, but died from a skull-perforation with something like an ice-pick and was coated in cement, still alive. Booth, who suffers from an infected tooth but dreads the dentist more, soon finds 'cement-head' was William Raymund 'Billy Rae' McKenna, his probable killer ('ice-pick', his trademark weapon) Hugh Kennedy -who died in a car fire after his leg was severed while fleeing bounty hunter Veleska Miller- was a rival in the gang of West Virginia crime king Melvin Gallagher, whose 'pilot' Clark Lightner is clearly smarter. Bones coldly calls the police when her dad Max Keenan turns up at her mother's grave; later Max slips into her flat, to demand she checks his own police record, which shows nothing mean, then tips her off Kennedy is a miniature airplane-fan, who cut off his own leg to stage his death; Booth finds him, only to be knocked down by him and found by Gallagher and Lightner, who ... A dead astronaut is found in a crater, and the remains appear to have fallen from a great height without a parachute. Hodgins analyzes the bones and concludes that the body was in space for a long time before it fell to earth; he immediately turns to explanations of extraterrestrial life and a government conspiracy. Brennan and Booth learn the identity of the victim and talk to his family and co-workers, only to be stymied at every turn by the confidentiality involved in the space program. Strange slash-like injuries are discovered on the body and the group realizes that the death was not an accident. They desperately attempt to solve the murder and to figure out how the body ended up in a crater looking like it fell from space. Meanwhile, Hodgins continues to try to win Angela over. The only explanation is an aging disease, actually Winters syndrome, which also affected the brain of Cynthia Cole's missing daughter. She falsely accused social worker Joe Mellon of abusing the girl. The real cause of death is a striking OD. Meawnhile, Max brings Bones things from her grandma.
