They rule out ransom as the motive they think that it could have something to do with her father. But later another couple whose child goes to the same school gets a call from someone saying they have their daughter. But she's there so they call 5-O and they deduce that the kidnapper got the wrong child. When he calls and demands a unusual amount of money, they think this might not be about money. When a Detroit hit man is taken out by one of his colleagues on the streets of Oahu, Five-0 is shocked to learn the killer's surprising motives. Meanwhile, Chin puts his career on the line to help Danny get the money he needs to save his brother's life.

When Steve goes to visit his father's grave he sees a woman also visiting. He approaches her and asks her who she is. She says that his father investigated her father's murder, which to this day is still unsolved. She says that before his father died, he called to tell her he may have found a new lead. But of course he was unable to pursue it. Steve decides to look into it. It was believed that it was a robbery but Steve discovers evidence that it wasn't; that someone wanted to kill him. When a man is found with his tongue cut off, the team investigates. Jerry calls Steve when the man he was investigating for counterfeiting grabbed and made him watch him kill someone. Steve turns to Ellie for help but is unable to, so Steve goes on. When he sees the man, he figures out the man's identity is false, so he tries to find who he really is. Chin, Kono, and Grover continue to find the killer and discover another body only this time a different part of the body was taken. And when Max sees the body, he thinks he knows who the killer is. And it's while he's being tortured that Steve recalls when his father was being held captive but he imagines that instead of his father being killed he is saved by Chin and Danny. They learn that their children were away at the time, so they question them but the family lawyer stops them. They learn that the friend they were staying with was one of the people his father stole from so they question him but he denies it. They try to get the sons to take a lie detector test but one of them refuses and runs away. They find him and learn what's he hiding and it's not that he killed them. They turn their attention to another person who stood to gain. Steve's Aunt Deb returns and announces that she's going to marry someone. When a neurosurgeon is assassinated just before performing surgery, Five-0 uncovers the shocking truth behind the disappearance of four reform school boys 40 years ago. Also, McGarrett's Mercury Marquis is stolen by an unlikely culprit. Daniel Baldwin returns as Paul Delano.

Joe White returns to Hawaii to escort a man who was infected with deadly strain of the avian flu. He calls Steve to accompany him. But while on route they are attacked and the patient is taken. Steve manages to kill one of them. They deduce that they took the man because they want to use the disease as a weapon. They learn the man is some kind of mercenary So they learn they need a scientist who could weaponize it and they find one who hasn't been to work. They go to his house and some men shoot at them, they take them out and find the scientist's wife tied up. They deduce they grabbed the scientist and used his wife as leverage. When a journalist is killed, Five-0 must use his past reporting to hunt down a presumed dead Congolese warlord who is alive and well living on Oahu. Also, as Valentine's Day approaches, Danny overreacts when Grace's texts to a boy start accidentally coming up on his cell phone.

When a couple is killed when someone sets fire to their house and traps them, the team investigates. When McGarrett arrives, he sees that no one is inside the house investigating. He learns that an ATF agent has taken charge. She says that who set the fire, has set fires on both Hawaii and California but this would be the first time someone was killed. Which means he's escalating. Steve learns the agent is officially not on the case because the arsonist killed her husband. Danny decides to take his girlfriend, Amber on a week end getaway and decides to be incommunicado. Kona meets a guy who is looking for his wife who is Amber. So he tells Steve who checks the guy out. They find blood not far from the store and deduce that the thief's partner double crossed him and shot him. But the guy apparently is not dead. They eventually learn who the partner is, a girl. Steve decides to keep an eye on her and wait for her partner to show up. So Steve and Danny take the apartment across from her and keep her under surveillance. They want the man but Steve won't give him. He says he saw an execution which is why they want him. Steve somehow subdues them, and tells Odell to bring him to the hospital and goes to their boss who tells him the man lied and tells him the truth about what is going on, which means Odell's life is in danger. Jerry is arrested as the one who committed some armed robberies. based on a victim identifying him. Jerry tells Chin he didn't do it and Chin sets out to find out who did. Grover's oldest and closest friend tells him that he witnessed his wife fall off a cliff to her death, but Grover suspects it was no accident. Meanwhile, Danny and Dr. Shaw get trapped in an elevator with a dead body that needs to be processed.

When Elvis impersonator dies while performing, the team investigates. Jerry who was there is more concerned with his costume which he says is not right. Steve eventually find out how he was killed and by who. Steve thinks are all wrapped up but then Danny calls to tell him someone killed the person who made the man's costume. And the same person breaks into the morgue and takes the man's body. They later find the body stripped of the costume. Steve finds one of the gems from the costume and sees that it's a real diamond and that it was stolen. They assume that they were planning to smuggle the diamonds out of the country by sewing them into the costume. But the impersonator got it by mistake. They also discover someone else is looking for the diamonds and is willing to kill anyone to get them. Chin thinks he sees Gabewho later calls him asking Chin to help him. Steve, Danny and Grover are investigating the death of a young girl. It seems like three men from the mainland were trying to hide her body. They say that they went out and partied and when they woke up they found her in the bathroom of their hotel room. So Steve and the others retrace their steps. Jerry thinks he saw a woman being abducted so he calls Chin who comes. They find the car her abductor used and find the abductor dead. Kono decides to go sailing in the boat her mother made. Chin is worried that a storm is coming but Kono said she planned it that she'll avoid the storm. So she goes but the storm comes early and the boat is wrecked. Kono finds herself trapped on the water with only her board. While struggling to survive, she recalls all the things her mother taught her which helps her. The guys are working a series of robberies at pharmacies. It seems what was taken are what's needed to make meth. Chin knows a meth cook who just got out. They go to his son who doesn't care about his father. When a police officer is shot, the team investigates. It seems he pulled over a car and someone in the car shot him and killed someone else. Dashboard video shows that the officer pulled someone over and he cuffed the driver and went to check in the trunk and someone came out and took the officer's gun and shot him and the driver and drove off. They learn that the man who was killed is a bounty hunter and think that the one in the trunk is someone he caught. They think they know who the fugitive is so they go to his place and find another bounty hunter there. He tells them the man is a serial killer from New York who is also a cop. They try to find him.
