Flynn and Provenza are tasked to take a witness in a murder trial prosecuted by Rios to a motel. They're to pick him up the next day for the trial, but when they arrive, they find the motel surrounded by police arresting him as a robbery-murder suspect. When questioned, he says he went out, got drunk, and doesn't remember anything. Rios is upset because this is an important case which she had been working on for over a year. The witness will be discredited if he did this crime, so everyone tries to find out what happened. The squad investigates a brutal murder, but they soon find that dark secrets are at the root of an apparent drug bust gone wrong. A man is found dead, and the killer leaves so many clues around, like his prints. They also find another body of a girl. They learn that the killer dyed his hair to look like the man he killed. They learn that the man was chosen to be on a reality TV show. They get a photo of the killer withdrawing from the ATM of the man he killed. They talk to the producers and they say that the killer also tried out for the show but was rejected, which makes them think that's what's driving him. Taylor decides to release his name and picture to the media but Raydor doesn't want to. Later he picks up a girl and stays with her, and when she sends his picture to her friends, one of them sees that he's the one the police are looking for and sends her a message, which he sees first, so he kills her. Major Crimes gets a scare when two Russian exchange high schoolers die from poison-laced ecstasy, calling for hazmat suits till the possibly virulent toxin can be deemed relatively safe. Once deemed, attention turns to the high school, where narc officer Cooper identifies all the known student dealers for questioning. As the squad untangles that problem (which becomes more personal than it first seems), Taylor and Provenza present Rusty with two options for handling the anonymous letter threats - constant police supervision or exile to Oregon under the witness protection program. When a newly released prisoner misses two back-to-back parole meetings, the squad is called in to track him down after the suspect's therapist expresses concerns over his mental state. When a congressman's well-off son gets whacked in a gang-riddled neighborhood, the Major Crimes division must work with the FBI - including Fritz Howard - to find his killer, which entails solving the earlier murder of an eye-witness to a gang killing that appears connected. The owner of a used car dealership dies when a bomb in the car he enters goes off. The team arrives and discovers that the car was not the one he usually uses. There are several people who would have wanted to see him dead, like his partner/father from whom he took control away and made major changes (like firing most of their employees, making them all suspects), and his wife, whom he left for another man to whom he was originally going to give the car the bomb was placed in. As the operation to flush out the one threatening Rusty goes on, Raydor remains worried. Investigation of a floating body found wrapped in a plastic couch cover leads to the discovery of two other victims, all in jail recently, all stabbed to death three times, all wrapped in couch covers. Through the recent victim's girlfriend, the team learns of errands to deliver specific letter-writing materials to the person stalking Rusty.
