In Midsomer, there lives two families, the Hicks and the Hammonds, who have been feuding since World War I when a Hammond was part of a firing squad that killed a Hicks. The Fitzroy family's lordly attitude does not help the investigation and then estate manager Robin Lawson and old family servant Peggy are both murdered. Enquiries lead to the hotel where Christina's brother Martin is head barman and where a mystery man booked in with an appointment to see Guy Sandys, editor of the glossy 'Midsomer Life' magazine. Sandys is found stabbed to death after expecting to receive an envelope and when alcoholic hotel housekeeper Eleanor Crouch voices her suspicions about the mystery guest she ends up dead in a tumble dryer. Barnaby discovers that years earlier a miscarriage of justice had been perpetrated which only now certain people are aiming to rectify and which the original criminal is anxious to keep secret, striking at the heart of Midsomer life. She was a member of an occult group headed by imperious Ernest Balliol.Balliol and a former colleague in the group Aloysius Wilmington have long been at odds as both are anxious to locate a priceless antique book,believed to be somewhere on Aloysius's premises. Balliol has married again and his daughter Isolde is as fervent as he is in trying to find the book. His gentler son Tristan lives with and cares for his mother,Ernest's fragile first wife Rosemary. Two more deaths follow and each victim was present when one of Balliol's wives was recruited into the group years earlier. Especially bitter is Penny Galsworthy,wife of another T.A. officer and garage owner Tim, whose daughter killed herself after being impregnated by Jamie, and she stalks him obsessively. George Barkham, another soldier, missed out on being promoted to a partnership at Matt Parkes' haulage firm, thanks to Jamie, who is also black-mailing George's daughter. The Parkes' yard is torched, causing an explosion and a watch-man almost killed. Then a criminal associate of Jamie and Jamie himself both meet their maker in quick succession. Postman Sam Nelms' morning delivery takes a strange turn when he discovers the occupants of neighboring cottages, the Goodfellows and Thomases have vanished, leaving half-eaten breakfasts on the table. Some years earlier the Thomases' son died in nearby Monks Barton woods,believed to be haunted, and flamboyant psychic Cyrus LeVanu arrives to perform an exorcism in the woods. The corpse of a known antiques burglar and those of the Thomases are discovered whilst Stanley Goodfellow is found,raving and apparently mad. An antiques theft ring is exposed,headed by the next victim, who manufactured ghostly noises in the woods to scare people away from his misdeeds.
