When an early copy of Midsomer's beloved (and dead) composer Joan Alder's most famous work surfaces, people start dying. Barnaby is an old friend of the family and investigates the deaths, plus delves into the mystery surrounding Joan's love life and the reasons she left the village years earlier. Det. Supt. Barnaby and DS Scott investigate the murder of Patrick Pennyman, an undertaker in the village of Fletcher's Cross. The man's wife thinks he committed suicide but the pathologist determines he was killed. The man died soon after his return home after attending a service at the local spiritualist church, itself the source of some controversy in the village. As the investigation progresses, the police learn that Pennyman was generally disliked. Former employees, business partners and others all had a grudge against him of one sort or another. Barnaby believes the head of the Spiritualist church to be a charlatan and while there is a link to the ever increasing number of murder victims, the solution to the crimes is to be found in an illicit love affair. While attending the Midsomer Regatta with his wife Joyce and daughter Cully, Det. Chief Inspector Barnaby finds himself investigating the murder of Guy Sweetman, the rowing club's chairman who is found floating in the river. Sweetman was quite a ladies man and there is no end of suspects on that score. However, Barnaby and DS Scott also learn that the dead man was having frequent meetings with two other members of the club and may have had an arguments with them the evening he disappeared. As the investigation continues, the police learn that the secret meetings all had to do with money, or the lack of it as all involved were having financial difficulties. All is not well with the members of the Midsomer Malham Orchid Society. DCI Barnaby and DS Scott find themselves investigating the murder of Madeline Villiers, a member of the Society and as it turns, someone who was selling very rare orchids for huge sums. The autopsy reveals she was poisoned with hemlock. They soon after find Henry Plummer, also a member of the Orchid Society, hanging from the rafters in his garage and his entire orchid collection destroyed. What they learn is that for many members of the Society, collecting orchids is as addictive as drugs and there is no shortage of possible suspects as a result. Written by garykmcd

Barnaby and Scott enter the world of horse racing when the trainer of thoroughbred Bantling Boy is battered to death. Bruce Hartley was an alcoholic who had vowed to expose the reason why his father bequeathed the horse to four Midsomer villagers. The other members of the syndicate come under suspicion, but the killing continues - then Bantling Boy falls ill. The detectives must unravel secrets hidden at the aristocratic Bantling Hall to find the killer. Written by Anonymous

DCI Barnaby and Sgt. Scott investigate the death of John Ransom in the village of Midsomer Mere. He had just been ejected from a pub for fighting but the post mortem shows a series of burn marks on his skull indicating he may have been subject to electric shock. The police find that the dead man's brother Max was conducting experiments in precognition and had applied the shocks. As Barnaby delves deeper, he learns of an ongoing dispute between the Ransom and the Kirby families over whether a newborn niece should be baptized. Young solicitor Nicholas Turner, plagued by financial problems, falls from the roof of his house as his wife witnesses the event through the front windows. As Barnaby and Scott investigate the possibility of foul play, Turner's neighbor and friend, Jack Wilmot mysteriously disappears. Two eccentric friends of Wilmot's, an obsessive wine snob and an unsuccessful game show host, fall under suspicion as Barnaby begins to turn up details of an elaborate fraud involving all four men. before long, DCI Barnaby has two bizarre murders on his hands amid a flurry of broken and empty wine bottles. A tour of Plummer's famous relish factory ends in tragedy when one of the visitors is crushed against towers of relish bottles and dumped naked into a 200-degree sterilizer. When the dead man is found to be an executive with rival company Fieldway Foods, Barnaby and Scott's investigation uncovers many secrets and lies among the Plummer family.
