Deserted for years, an historically significant house is coveted by a number of people: a yuppie couple looking for a country home to restore, a local builder and his estate agent partner looking for development rights, and a conservationist. The owner is anxious to sell, but when a couple of deaths occur in the vicinity (and inside the house), things come to a halt while Inspector Barnaby investigates. Oak Apple Week is an autumn festival held every year in the picturesque village of Midsomer Barton. After the festival queen died tragically from food poisoning seven years earlier, that particular part of the celebration was discontinued. Shortly after the reinstitution of the contest, however, the dead girl's mother is found drowned in a shallow stream under suspicious circumstances. Sir Freddy Butler uses the occasion of a local festival to invite his extended family to an elaborate dinner at his large estate under the pretext of making a special announcement. Included are two ex-wives, his current wife, two sons, and his eccentric brother. However, Sir Freddy collapses and dies as he begins to address his guests, presumably for natural. When his last will and testament is stolen from his solicitor's office, and a duplicate copy is incinerated after an arsonist burns down the lawyer's house, Barnaby is faced with a half dozen suspects, all of whom had a motive for murder. Another kitchen in Midsomer is the setting for a murder, this time the shotgun killing of a man who has been blackmailing more than one member of the local community. Barnaby and Jones must uncover the secrets each suspect has been hoping to keep hidden, and their investigation includes a respected man who once ran a school for wayward girls, a pub owner who may have shorted the tax man on inheritance taxes, and a couple whose weekend trips to the seashore might be more than for a relaxing whiff of sea air. Out on a family excursion, accompanied by Joyce, daughter Cully and Joyce's mother who is visiting, the Chief Inspector soon finds himself investigating the murder of Mildred Danvers, whose flask of brandy was apparently spiked with barbiturates. They were all there to attend the annual Skimmington Fair, a decades-old village fête that essentially pitted the women against the misogynist men. There are several suspects including Henry Marwood who returned Danvers' flask to her but has lied to the police about it; the local Doctor who seems just a tad too quick to pronounce the death to be of natural causes; and the Rev. Anthony Gant who, in addition to being Mrs. Danvers' cousin, was also mounting a court action against the Skimmington women in a attempt to stop what he saw as the annual denigration of men. A second murder, this time from a target shooting rifle, clearly puts Barnaby and DS Jones in the middle of a major investigation. A third death leads to the discovery of hidden ... A stabbing in a nearby village brings Barnaby into contact with people fighting for and against the building of a supermarket on the site of an abandoned mill. The victim was known to many people in the village, but under at least four different names. Barnaby isn't sure the victim's death is directly related to the controversial development or to the reason behind the man's many different names, which isn't all that savory. DCI Barnaby and DC Jones investigate the murder of Connor Simpson, a member of the Midsomer Worthy choir that had been rehearsing for an upcoming competition. The man was found in his home, bludgeoned to death with a poker. Simpson had received an apparently threatening note with a pig's heart enclosed. Soon after all members of the choir, Joyce Barnaby included, receive a note saying they're next. When local birdwatcher and photographer Sam Judd is also found dead - the victim of a 12 gauge shotgun - Barnaby is convinced that the two death are somehow linked. When they learn of Simpson's criminal convictions - and the reasons he went to jail - they are set on the path to solving the mystery. Written by garykmcd

When Tom Barnaby has his constable sit in on the murder trial of Annie Woodrow, the reports he gets back start him thinking that he may have made a mistake in assuming Annie's guilt. She is all-but-assured to be convicted of bludgeoning to death of an old school friend, as a reliable eye-witness puts her at the scene, and she was caught in a web of lies when questioned.
