Dave Nelson, a guy from Wisconsin comes to New York to become the News Director at WNYX. But he goes to the wrong building so he rushes to the right one and meets the owner, Mr. James. And Dave learns that his first task is to inform the current News Director, Ed that he's being let go. Dave has a hard time doing it. And gets to know the staff, like Matthew who is very meek. The station covers a subway derailment and Dave tries to get Matthew tunnel access, while the staff resents Dave's decision to order Matthew a new desk.

Dave has to decide the annual bonuses. Bill is upset over people leaving food on his desk.

Beth attends a fancy luncheon with Bill despite Lisa's concern that he will take advantage of her. Dave tries to solve the station's budget problems.

When Dave notices that Lisa is still in contact with her ex, he's not happy about it. She tells him that it's nice to remain amicable with the ones you were involved with. So Dave calls his ex in Wisconsin. He then tells Lisa that she's under the impression that she and Dave are still together so she goes to New York and Dave can't find the nerve to tell her that they are no longer together and that he has moved on.
